CLASSIFICATION OF ROADS.
ROYAL OAK. POST OFFICE,
The Onehunga Borough Council met last overling, the Mayor, Mr. W. E. Morton, presiding. The estimates of income and expenditure for the ensuing year were adopted. Tho Minister of Internal Affairs has consented to tho expenditure of £1620 by tho Onehunga Fire Board for the year ending March 31 next, the council and insurunco companies to contribute £772 each, with a Government subsidy of £75. Mr. P. R. Lipscombo has been appointed to represent the council on tho Fire Board. A special order, passed on March 31, making by-laws for a charge of 6s for concreting footpaths in Hillsborough ccmotery, and also fixing a charge for hawkers of perishable goods was confirmed. The council was asked by tho Mount Roskill Road Board to lay a. 12-inch pipe in place of the present one of 6 inches, to carry tho storrnwalcr from Hillsborough cemetery across Ilill Street, Mount Roskill. The request was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. The Commissioner of Transport advised the council that a Government engineer had recently inspected the roads in the borough and was of the opinion that, with threo exceptions, tho council's classification was suitable for the present traffic requirements of tho district. Hie commissioner asked tho council to raise that portion of Mount Albert Road which is in tho borough, and also Mount Smart Road from Royal Oak to Upper Queen Street, from second-class to first-class. Beach Road, it was recommended, should bo raised from fourth-class to secondclass. The council agreed to the alterations. Tho Postmaster-General acknowledged tho council's protest against the removal of tho Royal Oak post office, and stated that from"a departmental viewpoint the new premises were unquestionably tho most suitable offering at tho time tho change was made. The council made a donation of £5 to tho obstetrical fund.
