LAST PASSENGER TRIP.
FAREWELL TO STEAMER.
SCENE AT NEW PLYMOUTH. LOSS OF HARBOUR REVENUE. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Friday. A large crowd farewellcd the steamer Ngapuhi at tho port to-night as she left 011 her last trip to Onehunga, thus terminating tho passenger service between the two ports. Coloured streamers added a picturesque note to tho scene. As the vessel moved away from tho wharf tho crowd sang "Auld Lang Syne." When the Ngapuhi steamed past the broakwater tho sirens of tho liners in port and the railway and Harbour Board whistles joined in the noisy farewell. The Ngapuhi replied with her siren until she was somo distanco away.
Tho abandonment of tho service is estimated to entail a loss of £6OO a year to tho Now Plymouth Harbour Board, as a charge of two shillings a head has been levied on inward and outward passengers. Tho port dues will decrease also as a result of tho smaller tonnage of tho Hauturu, which is replacing tho Ngapuhi.
