GOLDEN WEDDING.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell Smith, of Paparoa, who were married on April 6, 1880. at, the residence of the bride's mother, at Mit.itai, Northern Wairoa, by the Rev. Thomas Baker, celebrated their golden wedding with a quiet family gathering on Sunday, April 6. For many years Mr. Smith was engaged in tho sawmilling business, having worked for tho Aratapu sawmill, tho Union Sash and Door Company and tlio Kauri Timber Company, spending in all some If) years in tho Northern Wairoa district. Upon leaving tho Kauri Company, Mr. Smith joined Mr. Chadwick's mill at Whakapirau. He took up his residence at Pahi, and spent ten more in tho sawmilling business. Upon his retirement, Mr. Smith ran the mail sorvicO for many years from Pahi to Paparoa during tho period when tho mails travelled by steamer from Ilelensville to Paparoa and neighbouring places. Mr. Smith was tho first to run a mail coach to the port. For some years Mr. Smith was on the school committees at Aratapu and Pahi. 110 is chairman of tho Township Domain Board at Pahi, having occupied that position for twenty years, and is chairman of the pAhi Cemetery Board. Another public office which Mr. Smith fills is that of riding councillor for tho Paparoa district in tho Otamatfca Countv Council. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have eleven children living, three sons and eight daughters. They are: Messrs. W. Smith, of Papftkura; Russell Smith, Okaihau: and Samuel Smith, pAlmerMon North; Mesdames W. Constable, Whangaroi; L. Cliff, Paparoaj J. R. Bayliss, Edendale; Joseph Rice, OnehungA; R. Brighouse, Kaipnra Flats; R. Cleaves, Knrikeri: H. B. Porritt and Carl Andresen, Brisbane. One son, James, is decensed. There are 25 grandchildren.
