OUTBOARD RACES.
CONTESTS FOR CUPS. ,CHALLENGE EVENT DECIDED. A good programme of outboard speedboat races was held under auspices of Ihe outboard division of the New Zealand Power-Boat Association at the Whau River 011 Saturday afternoon. The races, which were started on the clock system, were for special cups. Blito Streak, driven by Mr. J. Burns, diatincruished herself by giving: great displays of corner] 111? Nt high speed. Miss jiamilton capsized, but otherwise the races were without mishap. Officials were as follows:—Judge, Mr. J',. Maud: timekeepers, Messrs G. P. Robert - so'n, E. I?. Butler, F. B. Cadnian, E. R. Mount; handicapper, M'\ C. Wilson. The first race wn3 for boats with engines of D class or over and was contested over three miles for the New Zealand Heuald Cup. The boats got away as follows, in order of their handicaps:—Chief (2m 'lssl, Lady Gay (lm 253). Nymph (lm 255), Miss Arawa, Ocean Mule (303). The fastest boats. Humbug, Silvertown Kid and Marquette Pug. were unable to start oiying to engine trouble. Chief nearly completed a lap before Miss Arawa and Ocean Mule got away and gave a great display of broadsiding at the corners. Lady Gay cut in cleverly on Miss Arawa on the turn for the final lap, but the latter overhauled her on the straight. Chief, running well, held her lead to win, closely followed by Ocean Mule, with Miss Arawa almost a minute behind. Result.—Chief, 7m 38s, 1; Ocean Mule, 7m 445, 2; Miss Arawa, Sm 40s, 3. C Class Handicap. 3 miles, for the John Burns Cup.—Nymph Junr. (lm 50s) was limit boat, followed by Blue Streak' (lm). Miss Hamilton (15s) and Mis? Marquette (scr). Kypra Kid and Chief did not start. Nympli Junr. encountered engine trouble and stopped temporarily soon after the start, while Miss Hamilton capsized about 350 yards from the start. Blue Streak took the lead and held it to win by 7s from Miss Marquette, which gained by holding a very good course. Result. —Blue Streak, ,8m 355. I; Miss Marquette, Sm- 425. 2; Nymph Junr.. 10m 325, 3.
The next event was the special challenge race between Marquette Pug and Humbug. Both got away together from a flying start, with Humbug on the outside. She held a slight advantage on tho top turn and finished the first lap in lm 40s, with Marquette Pug 5s behind. Both boats, which are of similar design, were turning in fine style. Humbug increased her lead by two seconds on the second lap and gained another four seconds before the finish.
Result.—Humbug', Em 11 l-ss, 1; Marquette Pus. 5m 19s, 2.
The B class" handicap, 3 miles, frir the ■Tisdall Cup, brought out a good field. The boats got away as follows: —Bonzo Junr. (2m 30s), British Maid (ltn 555), Blue Bird (lm 555), It 11., -Roily Hoypa (lm 355), Hop-a-long (lm 255), Chancit flm 255). Miss Tamaki dm 255), Miss Akarana (scr). Fleetun did not start. Blue Bird got away before time and Hop-a-long started lm late. Bonzo, British Ivlaid. It 11. and Chancit made a gTeat turn on (he first lap. only a second separating each boat. It 11. skidded badly on the turns and lost a lot of time. Mies Akuranu came through the field in great style, but could not overhaul Chancit, and just beat It 11. for second place in the lust 50 yards. Result.—Chancit, Sm 38s, 1; Miss Akarana, 8m 545, 2; It 11., Sm 50s, 3.
Open Handicap, 3 miles, for the Gold?borough Memorial Cup, donated by, Mr. E. Maud.—The boats got away as follows Bonzo Junr. (3m 50s), It 11. (2m 35=?). Chancit. Miss Tamaki, Fleetun. Chief (2m 30s), Blue Streak, Nymph, Lady Gay dm 435), Mis 3 A taw;; (40s), Marquette Pug (ss), Humbug (scr). Nymph Junr., Kypra Kid, Galloping Goose and Silvertown Kid did not start. Nymph took the lend in tho second lap by 20s from Blue Streak, with Lady Gay 12s behind. The scratch boats found the handicaps too much to make nr. and finished approximately a, minute after the first boat. The 12 boats made this an interesting race, it IT. was disqualified for fouling Miss Tamaki when she cut in on the turn for the second lap. Humbug nearly capsized in making (ho turn for the second Jap. Result.—Nymph, 8m 6s, 1; Blue Streak, 8m 30s, 2; Lady Gay, Sm 535, 3. C and D Class Handicap. 3 miles, for (he Laidlaw Cup.—Chief (2m 30s), the limit boat, got away, followed by Lady Gay (lm 40s). Bluo Streak and Nymph (lm 30s). Ocean Mule (20s). Marquette Pug (scr). Silvertown Kid, Humbug, Nymph Junr. and Miss Arawa did not start. Chief held her lead throughout to win comfortably by 24s from the scratch boat, which gained second place. Blue Streak gave a very fine display on the lurnn. Nymph struck trouble after the first hip and retired.
.Result.—Chief, 7m Ifs, 1; Marquette Pug, 7m 4'la, 2; Ocean Mule, Sin Bs, 3. The linal race was a. B class challenge event ovet' three inilfr; for (he Farmers' Trading Co,, Lid., Chaiicit, It 11.. Akarana and Fleetilii got ,away well together. with Miss Akrirana close behind. Miss Akarana soon showed (hat she wub* (lie winner. POWER-BOAT ASSOCIATION. The cruising raco (o Awaroa Bay, AV:,iheke. a.vrangod on Saturday afternoon by llin New Zealand Power Boat Association was postponed. Tho race will take place inter in the season.
