PRIMARY SCHOOL'S SPORTS.

GALA AT TAKAPUNA. The Takapuna school held a gala in its grounds on Saturday afternoon.. It is intended to make the function an annual event, in the form of a sports programme and an exhibition of school work. About 50Q parents visited the school during the afternoon, and among those present were tho Mayor of Takapuna,- Mr. J. W. Williamson, and Mrs. Williamson, and Mr. A. Harris. M.P. The chief events in a long programme were relay races for boys and girls, for cups . allotted to the school under the conditions of the trust created under the will of the late Mr. Herbert. Smith, of • Hamilton. The length of the course was 100 yds., and about x 150 children in all competed. The eliminating heats had been run earlier in the week, the competitors racing in four grades, according to age, namely, 13 years and oyer. 12, 11 and between 9 and 10. After reducing the number to 3'2. teams of '° lu " drawn by lot for the final stase, with a clll 1(1 at each of these ages in each quartet J.tie winners of the finals, which were watched with keen interest by the spectators, were:--Boys: L. Jack (captain). R, Darroch, D Fenwick and F. Brinsden. Girls, captained by J. Mendoza. , . ~ . . Mr. Williamson presented to the winninx team, Takapuna scjlo,ol- - he has provided, for the Junior cricket championship of the Isorth Shoie. Takapuna has an enviable record for . school snort this season, and five championship cups which it has won were on view, those for the senior cricket of North . Shore, junior cricket championship of iMorth Shore, v junior cricket championship of_ Auckland, senior football championship of North Shore, and Herbert Smith Trust cross-country championship of North Shore. The oshibition of art work done by the senior classes displayed on tho walls of the schoolroom wae an interesting feature "of the afternoon.
