MODEL ENGINEERING.

INTERESTING EXHIBITION. MANY WORKING MODELS. An interesting and instructive exhibition of model engineering was opened in Browning and Ifwersen's Buildings on Saturday evening by the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon. The exhibition is organised by tho New Zealand Society of Model, and .Experimental Engineers, and provides many examples of intricate craftsmanship in the numbers of miniature engines of all descriptions which in addition to being true to scale arc actual working models.

One of the neatest models was a miniature enclosed-tvpe steam engine, measuring barely 6in. overall. Tliis tiny piece of work was beautifully finished in polished steel, and was shown working under steam, developing a speed of 5000 revolutions a minute under a pressure of 1001b. of steam. Another intricate model was a compound marine condensing engine, which was a model of completeness, being furnished with every detail, including an automatic lubricator. In addition to the stationary models there was a large number of model locomotives and launches. All of these models were constructed exactly to scale and are self-propelled. A model traction engine capable of drawing a deadweight of a quarter of a ton, and complete with a worm-drive steering attachment, attracted the admiring attention of large numbers of spectators. A small but powerful railway engine in the basement of the building, which was mounted on a miniature railway line, afforded endloss entertainment to the children. A model telescope, with minute adjusters, and a device which enables the lenses to bo focussed on a required star by the exercise of calculations on the slide rule principle, was another interesting feature. The exhibition will be continued daily this week.
