BIRKDALE. The Birkdale Women's Institute held its second birthday afternoon on Wednesday. M rs. Gilpin presided over a large attendance of members and visitors, the latter including Mrs. Dudley Dorman. president of the Auckland Federation of Women's Institutes. Members from the Albany . and Hobsonville institutes and the Northcote Women's Progressive League and Mrs. Hammond Hyde. Mrs. Dor-
man and Mrs. Martin, on behalf of the Northcote visitors, expressed • their pleasure aI. being present. Miss Basten gave an address on the appeal now being made to raise funds for a chair of* obstetrics in New Zealand. Enjoyable items followed. Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Williams contributing a pianoforte' duet. Mrs. Hughes a recitation. Miss Averille'Collins a Hungarian dance, Mrs. Becldne a "song, and Mrs. Clark and. Mis'. Dickson a vocal duet.
competition' of guessing the, weight of le birthday cake was won by Mrs.
Allenbv. During the afternoon tea the cake, bearing two candies, was cut by Mrs. Dorman. Last year's retiring com mittee were hostesses.
