REPORT OF ENGINEER*,
ROADING IN PROGRESS. ,
DISTRICT TOUR ARRANGED-' . The Waitemata County Council met res* terday, the chairman, Mr. I/. E. Kerr-t Taylor, presiding. The engineer reported that owing to wet weather experienced in the early parti of the summer the whole of tlie works programme had been crammed into th«f last six week:;, during which every en* deavour had been made to finalise ths - whole of the grant proposals for the pres* ent season At present it appeared pos«y* siblfl for the council to collect the full • amount of its Government grants, together; with some additional money not collected vi by other couniies which had also been da*-,; layed by the wet weather. The contractor for the earthworks ocj thu main highway in the Titirangi riding was continuing to make good progress* but unfortunately none of the road had been completed suffiriently to enable laying of a metal strip for use the coming winter months. An endeavour; r was being made, however, to arrange for; the completion of the road in sections so vf that it would be possible to put through T a metalled track for tralTic as soon as possible. Excellent progress had been made . on the Brooklvn-Huia Road, and it waa hoped to have 120 chains of the road fully;,; metalled by April 2. Arrangements had * been made for reconstruction work on tba >- Kare I\are cutting after a contribution had been received from the local settlers affected, while definite advice was being awaited from the Main Highways Board in connection with cement penetration pro* posals on the Lincoln Road main high* <t way, which was still in very poor con* dition.
The engineer reported having forwarded "? the traffic test of the cement penetration: on the Birkenhead-Albany main highway* k The engineer of the Public Works Department had expressed- the opinion that a! ; period of from 15 to 20 years would have * to elapse before he would certify that tha experimental section was satisfactory! As -j a consequence the whole of the work would be held up. x ~j. A sub-committee set up to consider tha- 1 * question of permitting a bus service with *>. loads in excess of the main highways classification to operate between Milford; and Castor Bay, decided to allow special consideration for two return trips a day, on condition that the speed of the buses did not exceed 20 miles an hour, that the •? weight of the bus and load was not in -g excess of five tons, and that the company, operating the buses was responsible foR " t .any damage caused to the road as a result of the extraordinary traffic. •" -5 c The following itinerary for the tour oß' the No. 1 Highways District, which memhers of the council are commencing on Q Monday, was approved : —Monday, March'.' 24.
