AUCKLAND'S NEW BOROUGH
ONE TREE HILL ELECTIONS.
CANDIDATE . FOR MAYORALTY.
There is a prospect that the election of One Tree Hill's first Mayor and borough council will involve no appeal to the electors. As from March 31 the road district will become a borough, but tha election for Mayor and councillors will not take place until May 14, so that until that date the Road Board, as at present constituted, will continue to function.
The chairman of the board, Mr. J. S. Hardwicke, has consented to accept nomination for tho mayoralty and there appears to be jio likelihood of his being opposed by any other member of the board. Overtures to. stand for the mayoralty were also made to Mr. R. G. Clark, a member of tho board and a former chairman, but ho declined. Ho indicated the possibility that ho would consider similar representations at the election 0. year hence. The board consists of seven members, and tho borough council, inclusive of tho Mayor, will bo *of the same strength. It it believed to bo tho intention, of at least six members, including Mr. Hardwicke, to stand again, but a, doubt exists ns to tho intentions of one member.
