A year of marked activity in relieving' poverty and distress in the city and diocese is shown in the annual report of tho St. Vincent de Paul Society,- , , A total of £1026 had been spent in assisting tho poor and sick. Gifts in kind amounting to £622 had been distributed among needy- families, while £76 had been expended i>) providing food and shelter. No fewer than 269 ships had been visited' by the St. Patrick's branch. Regular visits had been paid to the hospitals, charitable' institutions and tho prison. The, Indies' guild had rendered splendid work in the poorer quarters of the city.

The balance-sheet showed the society to be on a sound financial .basis; Receipts from all sources had totalled £lll3. The society, which helped people irrespective of creed, had an active membership of 89.
