RATES FOR PIGS MAINTAINED

At the Wcstfield stock sale yesterday values generally tended to bo easier. The (fontanel for beef cattle, which were yarded in good numbers, had not improved, and prices dropped Is all round. For sheep, which came forward in rather mote than averago numbers, the demand was restricted, and last week's rates wero scarcely maintained. This applied in a lesser degree to lambs. A largo offering of calves resulted in a decline in prices, particularly those for runners and heavy vealers. Pigs, penned in averago numbers, sold freely, and fully maintained late rates.

The quality generally was first-class. As was the case last week the demand was not strong and values again Receded. Extra choice ox sold to ill 17s per 1001b.; choice and prime, £1 Ms to £1 16s; secondary and plain. X'l 12s to X'l 13s Gd; prime young cow and heifer beef, XI 10s to X'l 13s; ordinary cow beef. XL 3s to X'l 9s. Extra heavy prime steers ranged from Xl 4 15s to £ls 10s for steers from the Waikato; heavy prime, £l3 10s to X'l4 12s Gd; lighter prime, £l2 15s to £l3 10s; lifeht prime, £ll to £l2 12s Od; small and unfinished, £8 10s to £lO 17s 6d. There was again a good entry of fat and young calves. Small vealers and rough calves realised late rates, but bidding for all other classes was slack and prices • again receded. DALGETY AND COMPANY. Dnlgety and Company, Limited, report:— Wo offered ox beef in laTgo numbers. The quality was good, but as competition was slack values were again easier by la per lOOlb. Well-finished heavy cattle realised £]2 5s to £l4 12s Gd: medium prime steers, £ll 12s Gd to £l2; light steers, £9 15s to £lO 10s. Cow and heifer beef was also yarded in usual numbers, the finality being first-class. Competition was poor and last

week's values were not maintained. Prime quality Polled Angus heifers realised £S 5s to £lO ss; one extra prime and extra heavy cow topped the market at £l2 17s Gd; medium cows made £7 17s Gd to £8 10s; light cows and heifers, £6 15s to £7 10s; extra choice ox sold to 37s per 1001b.; choice and prime, 31s to 365; just killable, 32s to 345; prime young heifer beef, 335; prime young cow and heifer beef, 20s to 31s; just killable, 22s to 2Gs. Sheep were yarded in more than average numbers, the quality being first-class. Competition was restricted, however, and last week's values were hardly maintained. We sold an extra well-finished line of wethers from the Waikato at 27s 3d to 29s 3d. There were four trucks in the line. Extra heavy primo wethers ma<lo 29s 3d; heavy prime, 28s to 28s 9d; medium, 275; light and unfinished, 253 to 2Gs: heavy prime ewes, 17s Gd to 18s fkl; lighter, 14s to lGs 3d; other ewes, 8s to 12s' Fat lambs were offered well up to usual numbers, no alteration in values being recorded. A decline on last week's values was recorded in all major departments of the weekly market at Addington to-day. Store sheep have declined sharply during the week, and compared with the market last week they were down by up to 5s a head. Fat sheep were eas er in price. The decline in fat cattle values was the sharpest Miia year, all classes being down by from £ l ]os to £2 a head on last week's rates. Fat lambs eased by about Is a head. Store Lambs.—There was an entry of 7000 compared with 8500 at last week's sale. Values declined by up to 5s a head on last week's rates. Best rape lambs made up to • 16s; good rape lambs, 13s Gd to 15s; medium rape lambs, 10s to 13s; good mixed sex lambs, to 13s; medium mixed sex lambs, 9s to 12s 6d; halfbred ewe lambs, 13s 9d; medium wether lambs, 10s 9d. Store Sheep.—The yarding was easily the heaviest of the seascin. Lines were penned from the North Island, tho West Coast, Otago, Southland, Nelson and Kaikoura. The quality was very mixed, and values showed a decline of up to 5s a head. Store Cattle.—There was an exceptionally , good entry of young cattle and prices were on a par with those which ruled last week. Steers, 18 months, brought £6 16s to £8; heifers, to £5 17s 6d; good cows, to £6 10s; bulls, to £l4 10s. Vealers.—A free sale for -killable sorts at late rates. The top price was £9 18s 6d. Fat Pigs. A large entry of both porkers and baconers met with fair competition. Prices were a shade easier. Choppers made £3 to £7 17s Gd; porkers, £2 12s 6d to £3 8s 6d (average price per lb., BJd to 9Jd); baconers. £3 15s to £5 14s 6d (average price per lb., fi|d to 7sd). Store Pigs.—A large entry. Values were a shade easier. Large stores made 40s to 455; small to medium stores, 26s to 375; slips, 23s to 265; good weaners, 15s to 20s; inferior weaners, 5s to 12s.

JOHNSONVTLLE PRICES. GOOD DEMAND FOR BULLOCKS [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J WELLINGTON. Wednesday. At the Johnsonville sale to-day there was the usual attendance of buyers. There was a smaller yardin/f than usual of all classes of stock. The cattle yarding comprised mostly' heavy-weight bnllccks, with a few pens of cows and heifers. Vealers were also yarded in large numbers. Competition for bullocks was good, at last week's rates, and cows and heifers also met with fair competition, while runners and vealers were in kten demand. The quality of the sheep was not up to the usual standard. A good clearance, however, was effected, but wethers showed a decline of Is to Is Cd per head, and ewes Is on last week's rates. A small yarding of lambs sold freely. Leonard and Son, Limited, have received the following cablegram from Mr. A. C. Rowson, London, dated March 18:—The butter and cheese markets show an easier tendency.
