FIELD WILL NOT BE STRONG. BY PHAETON. The coming month will bring the New Zealand St. Lecer Stakes up for decision, that event- being fired to be run at Trentham on March 15. With Honour and Pink Coat both out of training as the result of leg troubles, it would Eeem rs though the Great Northern Derby winner Hunting Cry will be accepted as the cne most likely to win St. Leger honours. Of the ethers. Eaglet has most to her cro-lit, but it would seem safe to conclude tho.t the Auckland filly would prefer a shorter distance than a mile and three-quarters. Possibly a stayer may be discovered among the moderate division, but at present matters in connection with the autumn classic event are (he reverse of promising.

THE AUSTRALIAN CUP. FAVOURITE DIVISION. The Australian Cup. which is set down to be tub at Flemington on March 4, is the next lons-distance event eet down on the Racing Calendar. When the ]ast mail to hand left, Sydney the five-year-old Prince Viol (8.9) was the ruling favourite, Lasi year Prince Viol won the Hobart Cup (1J miles) under 8.2, and a recent success in the Wyndham Handicap (1 mile 3 fur.), in ■which event he carried 8.13, is considered to have brightened his prospects of success in the bis race at Flemingtan. The particular horse engaged in the Australian Cup in which New Zealanders will be most interested is Second Wind, who was bred in this Dominion and who wua awarded the position of honour with 9.3. Second Wind won the West Australia Derby bst year, and his leading performance this season was registered in the V.R.C. Handicap (li miles), in which race he carried 9.0 and covered the .distance in 3m l:s. beating a field of nine in good Etyle. It is quite recognised that this is a weak year, and, though Second Wind is not greatly extolled, he is considered likely to play a part in the settlement of the Question. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. A PROMISING GELDING. Waterlint-. a three-year-old son of The Ace and Sailor's Hope, who carried Sir ! George Clifford's colours to victory in 'he Abbotsford Handicap at the Dunedin meeting last Saturday, is viewed in a promising light and an opinion is expressed' that he will develop the staying quality. Anyway, he was timed to run the seven furlongs attached to the Abbotsford Handicap, in lm 26 4-ss, and that shows ho knows how to gallop. The Ace, sire of Wai-erline, is by Bayardo (eon of Bay Ronald) from Ueaa. by Knight of Malta (son of Galopin).

On ths aanve side tiers is a great deal to expect from Waierline as a stayer, for his dnm, Sailor's Hope, is by Treadmill (son oi Bill of Portland) from ry Pilgrim's Progress (son of iEcnony). Two strain? of Musket come to Waterline cn the dam's .side, one through Maxim md the 'other through Trenton. It is seme little time since Sir George Clifford was able to claim a. first-rater, and it will be especially pleasing to chronicle that Waterline comes up to the standard. TOXEUMA AT FOUR YEARS. At the Wocdviile meet ice this week Toxeuma kept up his character for consistency. On the opening day he carried 9.9 into second place in the decision of the Ruahine Handicap (sis furlonge), and as it was only a question of a head between him and Arikinui, who had 241b. the best of the weight?, the honours of the race were with Toxeuma. Yesterday, Toxeuma. won the Autumn Handicap (one mile and a distance) under 9.3. Up to date Toxeuma has contested 39 races, and his record stands as

follows:—Ten wins. 13 times second, nine times third, and seven timea unplaced. • HISTORIC IX WORK. When Historic registered his surprise victory in the Grandstand Handicap at Ellerslie on January 2 last it seemed as thought ho was on the upgrade in the matter of condition. There was a recurrence of the ailment which came against him some 12 months back, with the .esult that he had to be eased up. The game son of Nassau is reported to be again in work, and it is to be hoped that he will now go on all right with a view to engagements at the autumn meetings. TOLAGA BAY FACES.
