THE ROTORUA MEETING.

FIRST DAYS EVENTS, ■ GOOD FIELDS. ENGAGED- . T.ho Rotorua Racing Chib'B annual race nieftiiifr nt Arawa Park opens to-day, and it will be concluded on Monday. Considerable rain has fallen at Rotorua yesterday, and thci going is suro to bo soft to-day. Howover, the weather showed signs of clearing last evening, and there was a good prospect of fine weather.

Rosebank has been scratched for tho Arawa Park Slakes. The Cup candidates. The Lover and Respirator, had not arrived last evening, and will not run, while Vnli, who had not arrived last evening, was expected to go out of tho Tourist Handicap. The following is the list of acceptances for the various events:

REVIEW OF THE FIELDS.

BY ARCHER,

Ten figure on the card for the Pohutu High-weight Handicap and it is a useial field for the class of race. The promising Kairuri, who has not raced since winning at his first start a. few months "ago, reads nicely placed, and Spring Abbey is another that also appeals. Page Boy, who is likely to be better for the race ho had last weeK, is ?. decided possibility, while Wako King, Mashoor and Always should also be capable of decent showings. It will probably be a decent betting race and some to find favour may be' Kairuri, 'Spring Abbey and • Page Boy. The class engaged in the Waimungu Stakes is moderate, and Loving Cup, who was unlucky when he was beaten at Takupuna by' Honiton and Chromadyne, should have an excellent chance to open his winning account here. Bold Archer is a promising galloper also likely to run well in this company, and possibilities among tho others are Ruapatu, Little Toy, Lußoma and Miss Albyn. Backers vvill probably stick to the horses that have shown a little form and go for Loving Cup, Bold Archer and Little Toy. Tho Mokoia Handicap has attracted a nice field, and, unless there are a number of defections, should be one o£ the Lest betting races of the day. Maori Boy is a fit horso and should run well with all liib weight, and Ti Tree is another that may give considerable trouble. Hakanoa may run in the Rotorua Cup irt preference to this and in his absence the best of tho others may be Mosaic, who looks ready to show form at any time, Good Boy and Glenstar. Tho favourites may be Ti Tree, Maori Boy and Mosaic. Another field of 10 is carded for (lie Rotorua Cup, but il. is probable that thcro will lie a. Jew defections, as The Lover and Respirator will not run, and Aware co, Good Boy and Hakanoa aro all in other races. Recent form says a. good deal for tne chances of Mitlira and Sir' Russell, md, unless the track is soft, Mitlira should lake a, power of beating. Pompeius, WeiuLy and Glena Buy aio light-weights all capable of making a decent showing, und whichever strips in i!ie beet condition should l e cijjial to seriously troubling llio topweights. Backers are likely to follow form again here and support Mitlira, Sir Kusdcll and Pompeius. Fifteen novices aro engaged in the Hot Springs Handicap and tho race bears an open aspect. Sir Moud, Loving Cup, Glenison, "J'arrapeen, On Top, Welcome Boy, Wild Mint, Rose Willonyx, and Rungitown havo all shown a. littlo form, while Tambourine has displayed sufficient pace on the track to also bo worthy o£ somo consideration. It is a race full of possibilities, but the preference will probably bo for horses with recent form like Glenison, On Top and Welcome Boy. Ono of the largest fields of the day is likely to cfmo out for the Geyser Hack Handicap and here again tho issue is open, l/noco and J'arfait Amour may havo enough weiirbt to steady them in this field and possibly Page Boy will run in the first race in preference to this. Brampton is my fit and should make u. bold showing, and others with chances aro Snow Prince, who won well at his last appearance, Red Day, Coll, Measurer, Thurnus and Romaic. It should bo a. fine betting race and tho favourites may bo Snow Prince, Brampton and Col). Runners will be fairly numerous in the Arawa Park Stakes, and in the probable absence of Bells of Shandon, who has easily the best credentials, ttie race may bo a tricky 0110 for backers owing to the number of unknown quantities in the field. Tho draw for post positions may havo an influence 011 tho betting, but some who may be fancied are Set Fair, Full Measure and Grand Spirit. The class in tho Tourist Handicap ib not good for an open sprint and tho expected defection of Vali, who would bo very dangerous if produced, will make it still weaker. Branson would havo a great chance here if JlO could only strike form, while Awarere, at his best, would bo the undoubted pick. There aro quite a. number of light-weights who might possess chances, and among these are Glenstar, British King, White Ringlet, Cruachan and Abbess. The public may go for Awarere, Abbess and Glenstar.
