INCREASE OF *D IN POUND.

LOSSES UPON TRAMWAYS.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday

Estimates for the coming year were considered by tho New Plymouth Borough Council last evening. These provided for an increase in rates for next year of in the pound, bringing tho total rate to 9d, as against Bjd last year.

The Mayor, Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths, said the estimates were based upon a decrease in the general rate of approximately in the pound, but the total rate would be 9d owing to the losses of the tramways department. The deficit on the operations of tho trams for the year ended March 31, 1930, was estimated to be £7569. In spite of the fact that £4334' was collected by \t-ay of rate for the current year, the net deficit was estimated to be £4328. To meet the position it was proposed to collect a rate which would produce £7758 and. leave a credit balance of £lO.
