WOMAN WITH UMBRELLA.

INCIDENT AT,TAKAPUNA.

• A woman follower of the turf, excitedly waving an umbrella, was responsible for an incident that possibly affected the result of the Hobson Handicap, won by Hard Words, at Takapuna on Saturday. Bounding tho home turn Hard Words was just leading Bells of Shandon and Set Fair, who were on, the outside almost at his girths, .and just as tliey straightened up the woman waving tlio umbrella came into' sight. The moving 'object cf.ußed Hard Words to swerve and- bo went out suddenly on to Bells Of Shandon,. whp became momentarily unbalanced. To onlookers Bella of Shandon appeared to receive slightly tho worst of tho bump, arid, as ho was only beaten a neck by Hnrd Words, there would probably have been preciouß little ill it only for' the-incident. When asked about the incident, H. Wiggins, who rodo Bells of Shandon, slated that he could see Hard' Words sighting the object some yards before lie- swerved and at the time he was endeavouring to keep os close as. possiblo to tho leader in order that his mount would not bo carried out too far in the event of Hard Words going out. The incident only serves to show how easily horses can be frightened by spectators and it is a good rule that wherever possible the inside course rail should bo kept clear of onlookers. HORSES FOR NEW PLYMOUTH. YESTERDAY'S DEPARTURES. ]t was the intention of J. T. Jamieson to take only four horses to New Plymouth for. tho Taranaki Jockey Club's Summer Meeting, which is to be held on Thursday and Saturday, but he eventually decided to take five, and ho sent In tho Shade, Hard Words, Eaglet, Havaspot and Treasury away by tho second express yesterday evening. J. Williamson, with Corinax, and R. Hall, with Lucy Rose, also left yesterday with' their representatives and they went by steamer. JOCKEYS' ENGAGEMENTS. AUCKLAND RIDERS BUSY. Sumo of tho leading Auckland horsemen will bo kept very busy in the next few weeks riding at meetings in and outside the province, and among tho number uro H. 'Gray, H. Goldfinch, H. Wiggins, 11. McTavish, W." H. Jones arid 'H. Dulieu. With the exception' of H. Goldfinch, who id going to Gisborno. they will all bo riding at New Plymouth this week; then they will all be preßent at Wanganui and subsequently return for the second day of tho Rotorua meeting. WIN FOR PATADAWN. SUCCESS AT ROSEHILL. It is reported that tho Auckland-owned horso Putudawri was among tho winners at tho Itosehill (Sydney) Meeting on Saturday. Patadawn is a four-year-old geldiiig by Kilbroney from Bon Chic, and will bo remembered here as a winner of it, two-year-old handicap at tho Auckland Summer Meeting at Ellerslio two years ago, jifter which he was sent to Sydney to bo trained by P. Riddle, who ia well "known hero through his successful connection with trotting Boveral years ago. Patadawn is owned by Mrs. l f . D.
