THE MOTHER'S CHAIR.
A WOMEN'S CAMPAIGN. At a meeting which was held in Wellington last week, in support of the effort to raise a sum of £25,000 to endow a chair of obstetrics at Otago University, the chief speaker was Mrs. T. H. Lowry, of Hawke's Bay. "This matter of research into the cause of maternal mortality and its prevention as far as possible is a subject which concerns every woman and girl," said Mrs. Lowry, "and I should like to feel that each and everyone was able to have a share in the work of helping mothers and preventing the high death rate which has prevailed in this and other countries in the past." .Mrs. Lowry then explained her plan, which was to issue card coupons, each worth one shilling and centred by a chair, representing the "mother's chair" at the university. This would enable all women to have at least one shilling's worth bf interest in this great help to women, while all those who were able arid willing to give more could take a whole card of 20 coupons for themselves or part of one. She added generously that she would provide the die and 7500 cards of coupons which would bo necessary for the Wellington and Hawke's Bay district, and would arrange about the designing and printing at once. Mrs. Lowry was elected president of the Wellington and Hawke's Bay division of the mother's chair effort, with Lady Buckleton vice-president; Dr., Sylvia Chapriian lion, secretary, with Mrs. M. Cable as assistant, and Mrs. Gaby, HiUaitai, honi treasurer. Mrs.' T. B. Lewis, Market Street, Hastings, is the Hawke's Bay secretary.
