TAKAPUNA-SILVERDALE ROAD.
Sir, —I consider that Mr. Sainsbury has just cause for complaint that the clay patches between Redvale and Silverdale have been allowed to the present, day to remain in a state of nature, notwithstanding that voluntary labour has been tendered and that the road has been declared a main highway. We have seen large sums of money spent on formation and metal for roads leading to summer shacks, and yet the above main road, serving the farming interests, is allowed to remain in a state forbidding wheeled traffic during the rainy months of the year. lam told, on what I tako to be good authority, that there is, or was, a fund in the council's coffer earmarked for this purpose. There is a big and growing market at Takapuna and Devonport for the produce of the farmers in and about Silverdale. It is not a question of the present quantity of the produce, but what it would amount to were there an all-weather road direct to the boroughs referred <o. At present Silverdale must send most of its produce to the city, and much of it. finds its way back to the said boroughs in the most uneconomic fashion. Some people would argue that the paucity of population iS responsible for the above neglect, but the landowners are paying rates all the time, whether present or not. Surely the co-operation of the residents, the Waitemata County Council and the Main High ways Board should be able to accomplish the work without difficulty. In any case, the loan required cannot surely be much in addition. The public would like the council to publish an estimate for (a) grading, (b) for metalling, and (c) for bridging the " water jump." Sine Nomine.
