THE POLITICAL SITUATION.

Sir, —It is too late now for special pleading on behalf of the United Party, such as that indulged in by "Fair Play" in Wednesday's Herald. He asks how the past session of Parliament can be termed unsatisfactory. How can it be avoided when the positive results are compared with the grandiose undertakings of the election platform!! The course of the United Party is already bestrewn with broken promises, and the future is not likely to produce anything better. "Fair Play" talks of critics keeping up a tirade of abuse, This does not come well from such a source. Before the last election the United Party and its adherents indulged in a campaign of abuse, directed at Reform, such as. has no precedent in recent years. Even in Parliament the United Party spent more time attacking Reform than trying to do the work it had said it alone was capable of doing. It has been very noticeable ever since this Government gained office that its apologists have raised the cry "Unfair, unfair," at even the bestfounded criticism. Those who showed least restraint in attacking Reform have been the first to take refuge in this appeal. It is no use. The referee, public opinion, says "Box on" and demands that United should make good the boasts so loudly uttered in its election campaign, or give way to someone who can substitute deeds for words. Observer.
