PERMIT OVERSTAYED.
INDIAN WRESTLER FINED. LOSS OF £l3O ALLEGED. DEPORTATION ORDER MADE. A former Indian wresstler, Bhagtu, aged 37, now a labourer, appeared in the Police Court yesterday charged with overstaying the term of a temporary immigration permit. He was fined £2O and an order for his deportation was made. Mr. Jacobsen, who appeared for accused, entered a plea o£ guilty. .He said that Bhagtu had not deliberately overstayed his permit. He could nofc speak English and did not know where to apply for an extension of his permit. About two years ago he gave a fellow-country-man £l5O to arrange for an extension, k and afterwards went to the country under the impression that it had been done. was greatly surprised when he was arrested. He had certainly lost his £l5O, and he would return to his country immediately. Mr. Mcintosh, for the Customs Department, said that Bhagtu was a professional wrestler. He came to New Zealand for six months in 1924, but an extension was made on the application o£ the Wrestling Association, and later another one on the application of a countryman. He had been working in Hawke's Bay for the past two years, and the department had been looking for him daring that time. He was now two years and five months over his time.
A month was allowed accused in which to leave New Zealand, to give him time to return to the country for his wages.
