ONEHUNGA COUNCIL.

CONCRETE FOOTPATH. COST LESS THAN BITUMEN. The Onehunga Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, presiding. The recommendation of the Streets Committee that the footpath on the west side of Forbes Street should be constructed in concrete, 4ft. wide from the kerb, a margin of 2ft. to be left between the concrete and the boundaries of the properties, was adopted. The estimate was £2lO. The Mayor said that concrete was thus being obtained at £2O less than the previous estimate of £230 for bitumen, besides keeping the money in the country. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., advised that he had referred to the department, the council's request for the erection of a new post Qffice at Royal Oak and had arranged for the Postmaster-General and the Secretary of the Post Office to visit the district. As the portfolio had been taken over by the Prime Minister the matter had been deferred, but, the department had agreed to keep tlio present post offico open all day. Mr. Jordan was thanked for his efforts.

Mr. S. Vella congratulated the Mayor on his election to the seat on the Auckland Transport Board rendered vacant by the resignation of his brother, Mr. F. S. Morion, and hoped that ho would have a successful term of office. Mr. Morton said that he would endeavour to v work in the interests of the transport area as a whole. The Auckland Harbour Board wrote giving permission for the erection of bathing-sheds and pools on tho Church StreeL beach for a term of 14 years at an annual rental of £l. The conditions were approved The district engineer of railways advised that as the erection of the proposed shelter-shed on the To Papapa Railway Reserve would to a certain extent obstruct the view at the level crossing's, permission to erect it could not be granted. A donation of £1 Is to the Auckland Anniversary Regatta Committee and ' one of £2 2s to the Manukau Yacht and Motor-Boat Club toward tho cost of sending a crew to compete in the Cornwell Cup contest to be held at Dunedin were approved. Tho Auckland Electric-Power Board notified that 100 candle-power lamps had been erected in Carlton Avenue, Princes Street West and Church Street West.
