TO-MORROW'S HOLIDAY.
BRITISH SOVEREIGNTY*
THE NINETIETH ANNIVERSARY.
MANY OUTDOOR ATTRACTIONS.
A goneral. holiday will be observed in Auckland to-morrow in celebration of Anniversary Day, which perpetuates the historic arrival of Governor Hobson at the Bay of Islands in 1840 with a commission to proclaim British sovereignty. The transfer of the capital from Kororareka to the .Waitemata and the founding of the city were mado later in the same year, so that Auckland to-morrow will be 90 years old. Shops and offices, including the banks and public offices,' will be closed.
With some justice Anniversary Day is known widely as Regatta Day, the great yachting carnival being the chief attraction of the holiday. This 1 year a record number of entries has been received, so that the harbour will present an even greater appearance of animation than at previous regattas. An interesting event will bo the participation of the Sanders Cup defender and challengers and the Canterbury boat Betty, winner of three Sanders Cup contests. In addition to the yacht races there will be numerous competitions for speedboats and outboard motor-boats, of which there are very large entries. The schooner Huin, moored off Calliope Dock, will be the flagship. Anniversary Day frequently enjoys the best of the summor weather, so that it is, above all days in the year, a great outdoor holiday. Beaches, island bays and shady picnic grounds call the city-dweller into the open air arid from almost every vantage point along the coast uninterrupted views will be obtained of some part or other of the yacht and motor-launch events. Harbour excursions and motor trips are always popular and numerous business firms, as well as friendly, societies, have arranged to hold their picnics at such places as Motuihi Island, Henderson Domain and Swanson Park.
The Takapuna Jockey Club will commence its summer meeting at Takapuna ■racecourse to-morrow. Followers of outdoor pastimes will be catered for by the Auckland City and Suburban Cricket Association, which will hold a number of full-round competition matches for all grades, the Auckland Bowling Centre, which has arranged several club tournaments in addition to the championship rink competition to be held at the Remuera ground, and the Auckland Dawn Tennis Association, which has arranged championship matches for C grade and the outer suburban clubs. The Hamilton Bowling Club will hold its, annual regatta on the Waikato River and the Auckland Rifle Association's championship meeting will be held at Penrose.
