CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
Sir,— Immediately I noticed the S.P.C.A. secretary's reply to "Benzine's" letter I rang up an active member of the society, who informed me that there were only two hon. inspectors, one in Auckland and one at North Shore. There were three, but one had resigned. This can be verified by referring "to the third annual report for September, 1929. When people pay their subscriptions to the society they naturally expect animal welfare work to be carried out without having to take the trouble to report dozens of cases. I fail to see how two hon. inspectors can answer the statement that "hon. inspectors are actively at work in various districts." Judging from the cases of cruelty to animals to be seen within a short distance of Auckland, it is time more active measures were taken. I was astonished to see that the secretary should consider notifying the office of cases . of., cruelty would be sufficient. It needs inspectors near or on the spot, otherwise, while, ringing up the society, and waiting for the inspector to be located —generally.hard to do — anc j for him to arrive at the case, animals may suffer a deal of cruelty and the culprit and witnesses may be lost. If the inspector visits all works where horses; are employed, what is the use of his doing so if horses can still be seen regularly working with sore shoulders and necks, which is the case, as I mentioned in my former letter? Benzine. •
