UNEMPLOYMENT CONFERENCE.
Sir, —The letter by Ruby E. Watson is well worth consideration. I agree. with her that a conference of earnest and able men and women to discuss ways and means of lessening unemployment would result in much good to this fair land, and its people. Dean Swift gave ■it for his opinion " that whoever could make two blades of grass, or two ears of corn to grow upon the same spot of ground where but one grew formerly had rendered more essential service to mankind and deserved better of his country than the whole tribe of politicians put together." In New Zealand there is plenty of new ground to clear and cultivate. Co-operation has done great things in England and Scotland for the people. It has helped them to be altruistic and thrifty and independent. If we could get a few enthusiastic and unselfish men who would be leaders in helping the workers to get homes and more personal freedom in their work, then things would greatly improve. January 24, 1930. H. Murdoch.
