REVERSALS OF FORM.

THE INQUIRY QUESTION.

BY PHAETON. During tho present week I found a Humher of keen followers of racing engaged jil discussing the subject of reversals of form and whether it was incumbent on ■the part o'i those controlling a meeting to bold an inquiry in nil cases. It was stoutly contended that there should be no discrimination in tho matter, for to act differently, it was pointed out. serves to arm over-suspicious people with a weapon that can bo used very unfairly. Those •?'bo can look at matters dispassionately know that in many cases where a reversal form has been recorded thero has been no transgression of tho rules and that the reversal has been simply duo to the horse failing in his previous effort to reveal the form expected, possibly in eomo cases clve entirely to unnoticed incidents in the running.' The fact of holding an inquiry into a horse's running should not bo viewed as a ptigma. Rather should the inquiry bo welcomed by thoso who desire to bo ecceptcd as properly balanced.

GOSHAWK AND AUCKLAND CUP.

CAN HE STAY PROPERLY?

When tho Auckland Cup of 192S was ,bnder discussion 12. months back Goshawk Vus considered to have a chance under 7.13. Something, however, went amiss with the Australian-bred gelding and he did not race tffler the Wellington Spring Meeting. The particular feats that placed Goshawk in the limelight at that stage of his career was a dual victory he registered at Trentham. Under 7.7 he won tho Wellington Handicap '(one mile and three furlongs) and on /ho second day -he carried 5.6 to victory in the Pcarce Handicap (one mile) and beat a pood t'cld. Goshawk figures, at tho •liinixniun for this year s Auckland Gup, and if he was voted to have a chance last year villi 7.13 it follows that he must be accorded to be in the picture with 13ib. less. Further l!ian that he is training on satisfactorily rt Hastings, nothing appears to he known 'ps to whether ho will bo given the oppor--1 unity of winning honours in the big lace Evt down for decision at Eller=lie on Boxing Day.

WEST AUSTRALIAN. DERBY

NHW ZEALAND HORSES ENGAGED

The West Australiai;. Derby is fixed to be run on December 2G, and with six New 7e;<land-bred horses engaged that circumstance will serve to infuse additional Dominion interest in tho result. .The six New Zealand-bred horses engaged are as follows;

Insurgent, by Kitbroney—Zia. Bonny Note," by Paper Money—Bonny Helen. Imperial Guard, by Valkyrian—Whitiacga. Hot Spring, by Chief Ruler—Tinkler. Puro Blend, by Tea Tray—Takahau.

Ellesdee. by Paper Money—Peircne. • Hot Spring won the South Australian Derby last month ar.d he is considered to have a good chance of taking rank as a 'dual winner of classic honours.

A GREAT JOCKEY.

GORDON RICHARDS' RECORD

There is a dramatic interest in the story of thecareer of Gordon Richard 3, who lias Leaded the winning jockeys' list in England in three successive seasons afld whoso abilities as a horseman aro made the subject of much eulogy. A London writer, in inferring to 'Richards' marked rise to fame 8s a jockey, remarked: —"When ho left srhool Richards took a humble job ill a commercial house, but he was ' racing mid,' and, greatly against the wishes of his parents, he wrote to a'trainer asking fir a job. lie was fortunate in that he siddressed the lctler to Martin Hartigan, and. though rather older than is usual, he was taken on' as an apprentice. Ho showed a wonderful aptitude as a rider, arid in a few years—that is, in 1923—h0 headed the list of winning jockeys. Then,, however, he had a setback. In reducing his weight to ride at Lincoln a couple of years ago he caught a chill, which had serious complications. and he was out of the saddle for weeks-. 110 returned last season r.nd carried all before him. His light weight has helped him, for a good jockey who can go to scale at'' 7.6 never lacks mounts. At Ilio same time he can get as much out of a horse as men a stone heavier." THE STRATFORD MEETING. GOOD NOMINATIONS. The Stratford Racing Club holds its summer meeting on January 1 and 2. and tho nominations received for the various events point to a successful meeting. The following is" tho list of entries for the leading event, tho Stratford Cup of £GOO, li rniles:—Chopin, Whisogne, Monsognc, Tho Swell, Yoma, Bright Glow, Llanore, True Mlood. Weriday, Pompeius, Seatown, Hipo, Hint Leaf. Valkon, Glena Bay, Opa, Horofcea, Orazonc. Paitonu, Calamine, Latakia.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

W. DUNCAN'S INJURY. As Ihc result of the injury \V. Duncan Buffered by a fall while riding Quick Reward in the Epsom Purse on November 23, it i-- fc.-ired that he. will not be able to ride ©train. On all hands it ia admitted Ihnt iUinean won a phico with the most promijicnt jockeys that- have figured on the Aus--1 rnlian fiiif. and his record in the saddle during the first stage of the present season was such as to give promise of his holding the leading position. PINK COAT. ft is "now stated to bo unlikely that PinjC Coat will ngaiu be found among the active performers durinii the present According 1o a South Canterbury writer, the chestnut colt is to bo treated to r.n extended rest, and >that ho may not make h reappearance on the Bceiio until l'.e reaches four years old. It is to be hoped that Pink Coat will make a com pie to recovery' from the leg trouble that came njjniust hiin_ after winning tho Harcourt Cup at Trentiiam in October, for that he is n colt of high calibre is a point on which Ithero'ia a wry general agreement.

C , . REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. BY ARCHER. Some useful hurdlers figure in the Pirongia Hurdles and it promises to bo an interesting iace. The Lamb has raced well lately, and, although he has a solid weight is likely to make a bold showing. Ramblin' Kid has been out of form for some time and does not appeal as much ..s Catonian, who has shown considerable nromise as a hurdler. Archcen " Wako King and Waltzer are all possibilities and Should prove the best of those below 10.0 It should be a decent betting race and backers may fancy Catonian, Wako King and Archeen. The Kilukihi Handicap bears an open aspect. Sir Russell has won at his ost two starts and-should again race well here. At even weights ho may beat thenthei top-weights, Ti Tree and Flying: Prince, although Ti Tree is very well. ■ Macroom. Black Maire and Gemlight all have cliancen and tho elect of A. Tinker's pair, Valuation and Lunette, is also likely to Ic dangerous. If it is Valuation, he is sure to be solidly backed, because he is a speedy and improving galloper who h:.s not yet revealed his very best. The event seem 3 certain to attract heavy wagering and the prime fancies may include Valuation, Gemlight and Sir Russell. Runners will bo numerous in the Waipa Plate and the race might provide a surprise, as there are a. number of unknown quantities among the candidates. On what has been seen of them Asmodeus and Welcome Boy may be the best of those above 8.9, while Perennis. Praetor and Biddy Comet read as well as any of the others. Perennis and, Biddy Comet have registered placed performances lately, and Praetor has -been galloping well. The only two-year-old in tho field is llluniinagh and if he is tny good he should have a good chance in this moderate class. However, backers will probably follow those who liavo shown a little form, and go for Praetor. Perennis and Biddy C'oment. There will be at least one defection from the nine acceptors for the Te Awamutu Cup, as The Lover will not run. The outstanding candidates are Prodice and Corinax. - a.nd, though they are making liberal weight allowances to tho others, it looks as if they will be tho ones to disputo the issuo at tho finish. Transformer and Flying Juliet may be the best of the light-weights, oven though they have not raced weil lately, for tho others on the minimum aro not good. Prodice and Corinax will probably carry the bulk of the investments. The Paterangi Handicap has drawn a useful field. Hakanoa reads well placed after his double win at Taumnrunui, while Wenday. Glena Bay and Quincoma uro possibilities. Tanagra would have a good chance in this class if caught at his best, and tho most likely of the light-woights may be Motere, Cybele and Thurnus. There is syire to be solid support for a numbei of the runners, but Hakanoa, Wcnday and Cybelo may bo singled out for most attention. Some smart gallopers figure in the Orakau Hack Handicap. A large field is likely and post positions may have an influence on the betting, for an inside position is an advantage at this seven-furlong post. Richfield should prove the best of the topweights, and likely improvers among thoso in tho middlo of the handicap are Patere, Te Hoia and Cruachan. 'There arc r'so somo possibilities among the light-weights and these include Joy Girl, Antique, Prince of Orange and Perennis. Richfield. T#< Hoia and Antique may be the favourites. A fair fiqld of sprinters will contest the Flying Handicap. On recent form Leitrim and Mervetto appear to bo tho lest prospeds, as they aro fit and have been racing well. Awarere has not shown his best in recent engagements and therefore he cannot be recommended, • although it is quilo on the cards that ho might race better oil his home track than he las dono elsewhere. Town Bird and Macroom should make decent showings and .the rest of the others may be Tea Time, who mar bo scarcely at his best yet. Storm Fiend, Leitrim and Mervetto may be fancied. Tho field for tho Ohaupo Handicap it much the same us that for tho Kihik.M Handicap, although Ihere are not quite so many in. Sir Russell and Flying Prince should go well and the best of tho others jnny bo Black Maire and Lunette. The last-named is very well and was taken to Taumarunui last week to win the principal handicap on the second day, which vas Abandoned. Lunetto should . have her rhance here and may bo favourite over £-ir Kusscll and Black Maire.

WELLINGTON NOTES. HORSES FOR AUCKLAND. STAR STRANGER'S PROSPECTS. [BY TEMIGRAPIT. —OWN CORK ESI'ON DENT] WELLINGTON, Friday. Star Stranger, Cylinder, Knightlike and Hunting Day will be ltept at Woodv.ille until Monday and then they go to HawCrn. After racing there they will go on to Auckland.

After his racing this weok and next and a solid gallop or Uvo Star Stranger will bo in great order for tho Auckland Cup.' Shrewd is to go to Auckland to contest tho cup. Mr. A. F. Symes will also have Gesture to carry his colours at Ellerslio in the two-year-old classics. Shrewd is trained by V. IT. Colello and Gesture by Mrs. A. McDonald.

W. D. Moroney will take Vertigern, King Midas, Tonterden and Count Palatino to Auckland. Vertigern can be regarded as a doubtful starter in tho Auckland Cup. He is a hard puller and it is difficult to obtain a boy strong enough to ride him safely at 7.7. H. Lorigan will sond Concentrate north for tho Cup after tho Kilbrouey gelding hns raced at Flawera. Concentrate will be ridden by B. 11. Morris at ILiwera and by 11. Gray in Auckland at a few pounds overweight. Cimabue, Diana's Lad, Dolomite and Royal Duke may bo raced at Awapuni and it is probable that Cimabue, Dolomito and Diana's Lad will bo sent to Ellerslio for tho last two days of the meeting. Aspiring is to -;o north to contest the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, her only engagement, and an effort is being made to secure 11. Wiggins to lido her. She is remaining at Awapuni for a few days in the charge of G. New. Silver Paper is being sent, hack from Trentham to Riccarton and it ia doubtful whether he will race over tho holidays, it ha 3 not been decided whether Mr. T. H. Lowry's team will race at Ellerslie or Awapuni during the holidays, but probably they will bo at Ellerslie^ ,T. M. Cameron takes The Hawk, Hunting Cry. Goshawk and Merry Mint to Auckland after the Ifnwera meeting.

NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. Tho lameness displayed by The Lover after he struck himself while galloping on Thursday did not pass oil as quickly as expected and in consequence he will not to a runner in the Tg Awamutu Gup to-day. It is probabl'o that he will have to bo eased up for a few days to allow the trouble to disappear.

Tho southern horsemen A. E. and L. J. Ellis will bo riding at tho Waipa meeting at To Awamutu to-day. A. E. Ellis will ride Prodice, Awamutu, Perennis and Flying Prince and L. J. Ellis will steer Biddy Comet and Cybele.

Tho following riding engagements have been nnnounced for . the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting at Ellcrslie: —A. K. Ellis, Toxeuma; L. J. Ellis, Prodice and Silverminc; H. Wiggins, Shrewd and Havering; B. H. Morris, Historic; T. Green, I'aquito, Dunraven and Honour; and R. Reed. Star Stranger.

Tho Hawko's Bay trainer J. H. Jeflerd is bringing four horses to Ellerslic for the Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting. His team will ■ comprise Star .Stranger. Knightlike. Cylinder and Hunting Day.

V. Colellt) is expected to reach Ellerslio on Wodnesday next, with tho Auckland Cup candidalo Shrewd. W. McKinnon is also expected to arrive tho same day vith Toxeuma, who is a fancied candidate for tho Railway Handicap. Toxeuma won handsomely under a big weight at Woodville and is evidently in great heart at present.

Unless present intentions are altered, J. Cameron will bring Merry Mint, Hunting Cry, Goshawk and The Hawk to Ellerslio for tho Auckland Racing Club's Summer Meeting. Cameron's charges may race at Ilawera before making tho northern trip.

The following trainers have booked accommodation at 13. J. Rae's stables as under: J. 11. ' Jeflerd, four horses; P. V. Mason, four horses; and G. New, one horse. Jeflerd's team has been mentioned elsewhere; Mason's will comprise Honour, Jaloux, Praise and Greenaway; and New's i epresentative will bo Princess Betly.

W. D. MoronOy, private trainer to Mr. C. E. Elgar. intends bringing Taliskor, Yertigern, Count Palalino and Tenterden to Ellerslic for the summer carnival.

The latest addition to E. C. Rao's stable at Ellerslie is a five-year-old chestnut gelding by Day Comet from Dolly Clements. The newcomer will take some time -to mould into racing shape.

NOTES FROM' CANTERBURY. GREAT STAR GALLOPS WELL. [BY TELEGRAPH.-—OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCIIURCH, Friday. P. N. Mason left for Wellington last night en route to Auckland with Jnleux, Honour, Greenaway and Praise. Great Star galloped very satisfactorily over five furlongs at Riccarton to-day. Ho will be shipped North on Tuesday and will bo definitely ridden in tho Railway Handicap by A. Eastwood, who has the promise of several other mounts at tho meeting. It was intended that Great Star would be accompanied by his half sister Retrieve, but she is not as forward as desired and-will be.kept until the autumn. 11. COMMENDATION IN SYDNEY. A REASSURING REPORT. [by telegraph.—OWN con respondent] "WELLINGTON. Friday. Mr, W. H. Gaisford had received some rather unfavourable reports about Commendation recently, but a letter from George Price by this week's, mail reassured him. Price slated ihat the big Limond gelding had settled down well and with a good strong boy to ride him in worlc he was making good progress. So far Price had not given Commendation anything more than pneo work as ho does not wish tho guiding to become stirred up in his now quarters.. Tho Sydney trainer advised Mr. Gaisford to pass by the mid-summer meetings at Randwick and give Commendation ovary chanco for there are plenty of good races in tho early autumn.
