ENGLISH CRICKETERS.

MATCH AT BRISBANE.

VISITORS MAKE 171.

HOME TEAM NOW AHEAD.

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrigh

(Deceived November 29, 11.15 p.m.)

BRISBANE, Nov. 29.

The English cricketers to-day began a match against Queensland. They were all out for 171, and the local players replied with a score of 187 for six wickets. The weather was fine, and the attendance was 5000. '

England won the toss. Dawson was soon out, and then Gilligan and Duleepsinhji delighted the crowd. Duleepsinhji gave a particularly attractive all-round display, his on side hooking being a feature. He batted for 61 minutes and hit nine fours.

Gilligan hit six fours. Ducat, the English coach in Queensland, batted well, but the other batsmen failed before the attack of Oxenham and Hurwood. Oxenham, who is a certainty for the test match tour, secui'ed three leg-before-wicket decisions, two in succession. Barratt aroused enthusiasm by lifting Oxenham for six. The last nine wickets yielded only 40 runs. O'Connor kept wickets well. The fielding generally was fair.

O'Connor and Levy opened the Queensland innings. The captain, O'Connor, was bowled in Nichols' first over. There was, no tea adjournment, as the Englishmen's innings closed between three and four o'clock.

Levy and Gough were associated in a partnership of 138, "which was broken when Levy was caught in the slips. He gave an exhilarating display, scoring most of his runs with well-placed shots behind the wicket. He hit 13 fours and batted for 85 minutes.

Gough batted solidly, and hit six fours. The fielding was lax. The Englishmen's total was passed in 118 minutes. The fast bowling of Nichols was most troublesome. Oxenham lost his wicket after a sound display.
