[Br TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Thursday.
The third annual conference of the refrigeration engineers of the different freezing works in the Dominion, convened by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, is being held in Welling- - ton to-day. Tho conference is being attended by representatives from practically every freezing company in-the Dominion. Tho chair was taken this morning by Mr. David Jones, M.P., chairman of .the Meat Board. In extending a welcome to those present, Mr. Jones referred to the 1 fact that the conference this year was of especial importance, as the Meat Board had arranged for the attendance of* the members of the expedition from England who recently arrived in the Dominion in connection with the scientific survey of our frozen meat industry.
This survey is headed "by Dr. Ezer Griffiths, F.R.S., of the National Physical Laboratory,' who lias a world-wide reputation with regard to temperatures and humidity. Dr. Griffiths is accompanied by Dr. Vickery, of the Low, Temperature Research Station, Cambridge, and assistants. ' •' -a /-,. . . •
Mr. Jones referred to a consultation between the board and Sir William Hardy, chairman of the Food Investigation Board at Home, when Sir William gave it as his opinion that a detailed scientific survey was necessary, following the meat through from the works in New Zealand until arrival at Smithfield market, and giving particular study to temperatures, humidity and state of the air. This consultation was the origin of the expedition that was sent out to New Zea-" land. -
The Meat Board, said Mr. Jones, was sharing .the cost, of the survey with the Empire Marketing Board and the Scientific Research Department at Home. The co-operation of all these bodies with'the Scientific Research Department at this end must result in great benefits being derived from the survey of the industry.
The conference will discuss some notes prepared by Mr. John Fraser, general manager of the board, relating to the freezing, storing and transport of New Zealand frozen meat. Addresses will also be given by Dr. Griffiths- and Dr. Vickery.
