CHELTENHAM HANDICAP.
SMART SPRINTERS ENGAGED. Some smart sprinters' avo engaged in tho Cheltenham Handicap at Ttikspuna. tomorrow and the issue is very open. Nanoy Loo lius hud a couplo of races without showing up lately and may not bo quits at her bost yet. Vallar has only had one fun this season and on (lint occasion ho displayed considerable brilliancy, only to fade away at the end. .Although ho is probably not yet' right at his very befit, ho is a fitter horse now and is likely to run the six furlongs fast enough to trouble the best of his opponents. Ridgemount was successful at his last start and 'U so well that hu must bo given an excellent chunce, while Lady Que.x's form at Avondalo was suiriciently meritorious to make her worthy of serious consideration. Lucy Roso was fourth at her last start and* is about to return to form. She seems to bo tho best of the light-weights, although Macroom iB a recent, winner and Tea Time has been galloping well enough to indicate that ho has not'entirely lost his dash. ]t is a tace full of possibilities, but Vallar, Lady Quex and Ridgemount read nicely placed and are likely to find considerable, favour.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. BY ARCHER, So considerable has boon the success of horses trained by J. T. Jamieson at tho meetings held- at Takapuna in tho past few seasons that tho representatives of his stable are always assured of solid support at tho gatherings on the suburban course. Tho Takanini trainer has a nice team, including Taurua, Clopton, Mithra, Refresher, In the Shade, Lo Choucas, Sight Draft, Caviare and \uli, engaged at the coining meeting, and it is Quite on the curds that he will increase his tally of winners on tho course, for several of his charges appear to have excellent prospects.
A very promising performance went clown to the credit of Taurua when lio finished second in a six-furlong hack event at Trentham last month, and though ho subsequently failed .it Riccarton ho can bo ticked off to do something better in the near futuro. Taurua is engaged in both the Melrose Maiden Stakes and tho Ponui Handicap tomorrow, and is likely to command solid support in whichever race ho is started, for the class is not strong in either of theso events, and ho will therefore have a favourable opportunity to opon hia winning account in one of these races.
Onlx for losing lengths at the start Alloy would have won instead of running fourth in a division of a novice event at Avondalo in September, and, though lie has raced unsuccessfully on two occasions since, hi.s e'ffort is not likely to bo overlooked when he comes to compete among the novices again in the Melrose Maiden Stakes. The three-year-old has been working very satisfactorily lately, and will only require to hop out smartly to take a deal of beating in tho class he will have to oppose to-morrow.
After running a third and a second in his first two sta.'ts' last season Measurer failed to cotno up to expectations, and was well beaten in his remaining engagements. This season he lias had two races without showing up, but he has come oil t. good deal lately and now seems likely to fulfil hi 3 early promise. Measurer's latest track form has been good enough to suggest that he will be an early winner in novice company, and if he ha 3 the luck to draw a decent post position in the Melrose Maiden Stakes he might keep Lis opponents very busy.
After three successive wins in hack company Prince Val made his appearance in the open class at Te Rapa recently, and ho demonstrated that he is capable of performing well in the higher grado by running a good second to Pegaway over six furlongs and filling the same position behind True Blood over a mile and a-quarter. Prince Val has probably yet to display his absolute best and can be expected to make a bold bid for victory in the Borough Handicap, as ho will run the seven furlongs solidly from end to end.
A recently promoted hack in Refresher is among those in on the minimum in the Borough' Handicap, and he may prove a tough proposition for the opposiiion, for he is a young and improving galloper who should successfully bridge the gap from hack to open company. Refresher's record cf two wins and a second in threo starts this season i 3 attractive, and one of the best features of his form iis that ho has dono better with each race. The three-year-old has been profitable to backers lately, and he should still be well worth following.
