FOE TO BLACKBERRY.

DESTRUCTION BY INSECT.

REPORT FROM THAMES

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES, Thursday.

Close observance of the habits of a black insect, similar in size to a small ladybird, has led some farmers on the Hauraki Peninsula to believe that it is a sure destroyer of blackberry, which thickly infests the unsettled parts of the peninsula.

The farmers say the destruction of the weed is most noticeable at Omahu, Tairua and Matatoki. The leaves of blackberry bushes are riddled with holes eaten by the inject and young are withered and dead. It is also.stated that the insect attacks the stems and leaves, which gradually wither.

A party of interested persons intend to visit the hill country during the week-end with the object of obtaining specimens of the insect.
