MAORI SENT TO PRISON.

PUTARURU, Thursday

Before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Putarui'u Magistrate's Court to-day Walter Leo Scott, a native, was charged with vagrancy and also with stealing £lB 10s, the property of one Robinson, at Putaruru. Accused pleaded not guilty. Robinson gave evidence to the effect that he came in from Mokai with over £3O and met accused at the Putaruru Hotel. They both became intoxicated and Robinson discovered later that he had been robbed. Scott was apprehended and was able to produce £l4 10s. He alleged that Robinson had pntrusted the money to him for safe keeping and had also given him authority to spend some if required. Robinson denied all knowledge of this.

Scott was sentenced to three months' hard labour on the theft charge, the first charge being dismissed.
