THE INTERHOUSE CARNIVAL.

TO-MORROW'S ARRANGEMENTS

AN ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME.

The sixth annual intciiionso girls' sports will transform Carlaw Park into a gailycoloured sceno of carnival to-morrow. The displays of tho brilliant sports uniforms, banners and trophies in the windows of the competing establishments have aroused public interest in this gathering, which illustrates the enjoyment derived by the city girls from organised recreation. Considerably more than 500 girls will bo taking part in the sports this year, and this fact, together with the enlargement of tho programme, promises to make the undertaking the most successful of its kind.

Founded six years ago by tho men and gills employed in the leading soft goods establishments, the movemont has developed partly by its own energy, and partly by the support which it has been accorded by the people of Auckland, until it may now be regarded almost as a civic institution. It has been carried on entirely by voluntary effort,, and from its original purpose of merely providing a day of recreation for the girl employees it has taken on a wider aim, which culminated last August in the formation, of (ho Interhouse Girls' Club, which is to benefit from the proceeds of to-morrow's carnival.

Weelcs of (raining liuvo been carried out by the girls in all the houses competing tomorrow, and in (lie military and physical drill events a high degree of ellicicncy has been attained, under (lie direction of Lieutenant T. P. Laffey. N.Z.S.C., and assisting officers. A feature of the sports (his year will bo that the team events will be spread over a much larger number of competitors, different teams representing their house in each event. Bearing in mind the increased need of public support, owing to the burden of maintaining tho newly-formed club, the organising committee lias enlarged tomorrow's programme by tho inclusion of several new events, apart from the usual flat races. There will bo somo new team games and a variety of gymnastic tableaux, while a novelty item, which is at present a jealously guarded secret, promises to bo something out of the ordinary. The elimination trials for the Physical Culture Cup were held in tho drill hall on Wednesday evening, and the final issue will bo decided between the (earns of Piobert Greer and Sons, Milne and Clioyce, Ltd, and the Plummcr Hat Company. Tho list of trophies has been swelled by tho presentation of two new cups, tho first, for tho circle ball team event, by the Farmers' Trading Company, and (he second, for the zig-zag team race, by the directors of Milne and Choyce, Ltd. The Grand Victory Challenge Cup, presented by the Drapers and Mercers' Association, for the highest aggregate points, is at present held by George Court and Sons, Ltd., and the Sharman Cup, for aggregate points in team events, is held by Mackv, Logan, Caldwell, Ltd. The other cups for competition are the 75yds. Championship Cup, held by Milne and Clioyce, Ltd.; the Marching Cup, Georgo Court and Sons, Ltd.; the Interhousc Relay Cup, Ambler and Company, Ltd.; arid the Physical Culture Cup, George Court and Sons, Ltd.
