COAL TRADE DISPUTE.

A COMPULSORY CONFERENCE. GOVERNMENT MAY INTERVENE. (Received November 1, 11.45 p.m.) SYDNEY. Nov. 1. A compulsory conference of parties to the coa.l trade dispute will be held on Wednesday, under the chairmanship of Mr. Hibble, a justice of the peace, who has had a long experience of such disputes, and who has figured in a number of strike settlements. Another development to-day is the announcement that the Government may take over a number of the coalmines in the event of Mr. Hibble's activities proving abortive, and reopen them, but whether by union or free labour is not yet disclosed. The Premier, Mr. T. R. Bavin, stated to-day that a number of industries were in a parlous condition, and the mines must be opened very soon to avert the disaster which threatened them.
