TOO DANGEEOB3. A strange woman had just called on the vicar of a certain parish v.-ith a distressing tale abont her daughter, who vras very ill in bed. She was anxious for the good man to come and visit the girL "I will certainly call on her if sbe is so bad/' said the vicar. " But I don't remember ever having seen you in my church. Do you often go V , The woman shook her head. "No, sir," she replied.. "We happen to be chapel people." . The vicar looked surprised. " Then why didn't you send for your own minister V' he asked.
"Oh, Ave couldn't risk him," was-the quick reply. ".You see, it's scarlet fever that my daughter's got."- ' THE MARK THAT SHRUNK. When the army doctor examined the new recruit the former was a trifle puzzled at the black spot on the latter's stomach. " Where did you get that spot ?" asked the doctor. " That," answered the iecruit, " is a tattoo mark." • "Tattoo mark V questioned the doctor. " What is it supposed to represent V " Oh, that's "my girl's name," replied the recruit.
" What is your girl's name ?" asked the doctor.
" Elizabeth," answered the recruit. " But that spot does not spell Elizabeth," said the doctor. " Well," answered the recruit, " it did v.hen I was fat." NOT EFFECTIVE. " Atishoo!" went the occupant of the corner seat in the railway carriage. ".Atishoo!" he repeated a moment later. He turned to the man sitting beside him. " Hay fever," he explained. " Always get it in this hot weather." The second, rhan nodded sympathetically. Then he dived into his pocket and brought out a little round bos. ' " Try some of this," be said. " It's a special cure for it/' The -sufferer removed the lid and gazed with interest at the powder in the box, "Is.it any good?" he asked.
" Any good 1" said the owner warmly. " Well, sir, I've had hay fever for thirtytwo years and I've never taken anything for it but thia.'i
