PENTHEUS WINSTHE GUINEAS

HIGH SYCE AND HIGHLAND SCORE

Australian and 'N.Z. Tress Association. (Received October 13, 5.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 13. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club's Meeting opened at Coulfield yestorday in fino weather, and there waß a large attendance. Silent Quest registered .a sterling performance in the 1010 'Welter Handicap. Ho was second to last at tbo five furlongs, but finished brilliantly. In the decision of the Debutante Stakes Kaftan was prominent throughout, and won narrowly. Green Wave finished fast, but was Ixoaten. Kaftan was bred by her owner Mr. Clivo Leonard, member of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's committee. The rider. Dempsey, won previously on Softon.

High Syce was running third early in tho Caulficld Stakes, but won comfortably in the closing slagos. This is trainer Holt'B sixth success in tho race. W. Duncan, who steered High Syco. won previously on Royal Charter.

In the deoision of the Ringwood Steeplechase Night Lark led throughout. At tho half mile post he had a lead of twenty lengths, but tired and was all out at tho finish.

Penthons. who wns prominent throughout, won tho Caulneld Guineas comfortably. He is engaged in the Victoria Dorby, Cnulfield (Jup, and Melbourne Cup. Ho arrived here from Sydney on Thursday.

Highland, who won the Toorak Handicap, registered a fourth successive victory, and has now won over £12,000 in stakes. He is owned by Mrs. L. R. Buxton, who also owns High Syce.

Ideal weather prevailed at Trentham thia morning for the oarly work which, in the main, is now disposed of beforo breakfast. Next week will see all trainers back to the early routino. The trial grasa was availablo this morning, and provided excellent going. Half-mile sprints were the general order and uonio good work was done by horses engaged lit the Masterton meeting. First Money was the first to work, his task being a solid half-mile disposed of in good etyle. Quantum and Hunting Call _ finished together over half a mile. Hunting Call has done well recently, and should now earn something toward his expenses. Kilmezzo was allowed to run along on the tan. Ex Dono finished ahead of Miss Ransom in a run over five furlongs. Both are yoing on well. nynanna had Modern ior a mato in a working gallop over a round. Ilynanna is making good improvement and should soon be ready to eport eilk. . The two-year-old sister to Degage, Joie do Val, hit out well in a nhort sprint. Tcheka and Dainty Ways were galloped a useful half-mile. v Panther and Footpad were given a solid five furlongs. Panther is improving iu condition. . Itasonli and Rational 11. are now being trained at Trentham by L. Goodwin. They were galloped fivo furlongs this morning. Rneonli is a three-year-old gelding, by Bernard from Gipsy's Warning, and Rational 11. a four-year-old gelding by Rosuendale from Sundteam. Tney nre owned by Mr. C. Boyle, who purchased them in Australia. ' . Air Laddie, who is now nrflig. trained by J. Lowe at. Trentham, was given useful work this morning . Glare Lit out well in a four-furling sprint. Historic has arrived back at. Trentham none tho worse for his Auckland efforts. Ho has been nominated for the Carterton meeting, and may bo given a race there prior to going South for tho New Zealand Cup.
