APPEAL BY ARCHBISHOP.

FUNCTIONS FOR WEEK-END

The Church of England Diocesan Synod continued its business sessions yesterday, the president, Archbishop Averill, presiding. On the motion of the chancellor, Mr. C. J. Tunks, it was decided to send tho best, wishes of synod to Archdeacon 11. Williams, bishop-elect of Waiapu. Special greetings were received from the Patriarch of tho Orthodox Oiiurch of Cyprus.

The Archbishop's special appeal for Church Extension Fund was shown to have a cash balance of £352 in the financial statement. His Grace made special reference to this fund and he appealed for further donations lo it. Since his fust appeal was made he had received about £2OOO and the amount had been put to excellent uses in extension work in the diocese. In many ways the fund was one of the most useful in the diocose. Mr. J. llogben and Mr. A. B. Roberton were elected members of tho Diocesan Pension Hoard. Members of synod will attend the St. John's College Association festival at Tamnki this morning, and they will be the guests of the warden, Canon A. VV. Payne, at, luncheon. This afternoon a garden party will be held at Bishopscourt, Parnoll, guests being entertained by Archbishop Avenll and Mrs. Averill. To-morrow will bo observed as Synod Sunday. Holy Communion will bo celebrated in St. Mary's Cathedral, Archbishop Averill being tho celebrant. Matins will bo held at 11 o'clock, the preacher being tho Rev. W. N. Panapa, Maori missioner, of Kaikoho. Tho preacher at evensong will be tho Rev. R. B. Davison, of St. George's Church, Thames. Synod will transact business during the afternoon and evening of Monday. A conference of clergy will be held on luesday morning and they will be entertained at luncheon by Archbishop Averill and Mrs. Averill. Tho wives of clergy will be entertained at morning tea next Wednesday by Mrs. Averill.
