The Bcene in Question took place on December 27, 1910. " Wager."—At three years old Poseidon contested 11 races and he won 11 of his engagements. According to the figures published, Poseidon's earnings in stake-money at the age named amounted to £13,890. " Automaton." —1. Tbe laj-ce«t Bum put through the lotalisator at Auckland Racing Club's meetings in any one season was tfcpt of 1920-21. when £i,l4ti,4So was handled. 2. The licensing of bookmakers in New .iceland was made illegal from January 1911. The last meeting at which the pencil] ers operated in Auckland was that held j by the Takapana Jockey Club on January 29. 1911. THE NEW ZEALAND CUP. FIRST ACCEPTANCE DAY. BY PHAETON. Tbe first acceptances in connection with the New Zealand Cup fall due nest Friday, and, though probably such will not serve 1o bring about any marked livening up in connection with the big event set down ior decision at Riccarton on November 9. the decks will be cleared to sotne extent of the division that have no credentials for a race of such importance. It seems quite safe to conclude that the two top-weights. Rapier ana Star Stranger, will hold their, places, and though Nightmarch and Paquito are in Australia they can. I think, be safely ticked off to fisrure acicng the acceptances. Though Historic's impost has been raised from £.5 to 5.12, Mr. E. V. Kiddiford is unlikely to allow his horse to drop out. Concentrate. Count Cavour, Oratrix, Cashier, j Pavtiier, Pink Note, Hoylake, and Pmtbaiv complete the well-performed lot that may be found included in the ccceptauce list. A j three-year-old engaged in the enp in whoso career a great deal of interest is centred is Pink Coat, but whether his owner will submit the chestnut colt to the test of endeavouring to win the New Zealand Cup is apparently yet to bo regarded as an open question. A BRILLIANT FILLY. TIFFIN RETIRES UNBEATEN. Lord Ellesinere's filly Tiffin, wlio won all her engagement* at two and three yearold on the English turf, is not- to be further raced, an injury she met with by on escapade being responsible ior her retirement. "The fastest'horse in the world" is the high-sounding eulogy conferred on Tiffin by a London writer. When a yearling the daughter of Tetratenia —Dark Wind was bought on account of Lord Ellesmere for IlOOgns, and, as she won stakes to the amount of £16.518, she proved a giltedged bargain. An internal ailment which came against Tiffin at the close of her two-year-old career precluded her being trained for classic races, ana she is therefore simply to be regarded as a brilliant iprinter.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES. A SMART FILLY. An Auckland-bred filly that has acquitted .herself attractively in West Australia is Pure Blend, a daughter cf Tea Tray and Takahua. Lett season Pure Blend won two rood races at Perth meetings, and at the opening stage o£ the present season he has a like record. Pure BJend is credited with beins an especially smart seiding o.er sprint distances.
MYSTIC PEAK'S SUCCESSES. The recent successes registered in Victoria by the Auckland-bred gelding_ Mystic Peak have been made the subject of warm eulogy in Melbourne. Mystic Peak ia by Borneo from the Shepherd King mare Refinement, ■u-ho traces to the celebrated Adventurer rcaro Mies Kate, who founded a strong line in the Dominion.
TOXEUMA. THE CONSISTENT. Tcxeuma is expected to make a appearance on the scene at Hy-Ht...ngs to-da>. the initial race .-elected for him at four years old being the Flying Handicap, ia which he figures with 9-5. Last season the son of Arrowsmitli won a first-class certificate for consistency, for in the 20' races he contested at three years old he won six of his engagements, while on eight occasions he finished second and came home third sis tunes.
AUCKLAND-BRED WINNERS. Pare Blend and Mystic Peak, who have displayed good form in Australia, were both bred at*Motukorea Maud by the Hon. E. \V. Alison.
GREAT CHARTER. When G rent Charter rotnptd home in front for the Jockey Club Handicap at lliccttrtoa in the spring of 1927 ft lick -as placed opposite name in many quarters as a hor?e likely to win further prominence. Two years have, however, almost elapsed since those ticks wore made, but they have not yet been borne out by facts. Great Charter only mannered to gain a. place in ono event last seusoii, but possibly he way not hurt; been an easy horse to train. Charter figures among the acceptances for the Flying Handicap, to be run at Hastings to-duy. and with 5.7 he shouid be able to tnke a band in the settlement of the Question.
NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BT ARCHER. The southern trainer "W. Meroney has hooked accommodation at W. Mobberley's Stables for two horses for the Auckland Hprine Meeting. Tho horses he is bringing will probably be Verticem and Talisker. A. Rhodes, trainer of Glendowie. left oa «. holiday trip to Sydney by the Maheno yesterday. He will return at the conclusion of the spring racing carnival at Randwick. Mr. T. H. Lowry's private trainer, F. Davis, intends bringing' a. team of five horses, comprising Great Charter, Gascony. Clever. Cbrysology. and another. to Ellerslie for the Auckland Spring Meeting. Cbrysology, the two-year-old by Psychology from Desert Gold, is to have his first run in the Nursery Handicap at Hastings today and he is expected to race prominently, as he has been palloping well on the tracks. He will have a pood t-est in being pitted against Simba, who scored handsomely in the Debutante Stakes at Waneanui despite the fact that he lost a cood deal of ground by hanging out round the tunt rntH in tht run home.
