AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.

ELLERSLIE SPRING MEETING. FIRST DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. Acceptances fell due yesterday for events to be run oil the first day of the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting, which opens nest Saturday, and the same are all round of so satisfactory a" character as to paint to a highly-successful gathering at Ellerslie. A highly pleasing feature of the acceptance list is the number of horses engaged in the Great Northern Guineas. Nineteen figure in the three-year-old classic event, and the fact of the Southern-owned colt Fink Coat being included will add a special daph of inteTeßt to the impending contest.

The Mitchelson Cup has 13 engaged— Star Stranger, who was appropriately uwarded the place of honour in the handicap, still continuing in the race, and Historic' has also been paid ud for. The Welcome Stakes has the fine field of 21 engaged, and the contest in the juvenile race promises to be especially interesting this year. The two sprint events, Short 3 Handicap and Flying Handicap, have each attracted good acceptances. 17 being paid up for iu connection with the former and 19 in the latter. The fo'lowins is the list of acceptances for the various events:

STUD NOTES. HISTORIC'S PEDIGREE. BY PHAETON. Historic having won dual cup honours and figuring as an entrant for important events near at hand, the lines ol his breeding 'can be perused with interest. They read as follows: Sire; Nassau, by William the Third (son of St. Simon) from Stolen Love, by Buccaneer <son of Wild Dayrell) from True Love. by Sterling (son of Oxford). * Dam: Brayton. by Bardolph (son of Bay Ronald) from Zaza, by The Admiral (son of Richmond) from The Charmer, by Henchman (son of Fireworks).

WINKING SIRES. When the last mail to band left London Tetratema (by The Tetrarch—Scotch Gift) was well ahead oil the winning sires' list. Up to August, 14 of Tetratema's progeny had won 2i races, the stake money attached to which amounted to £18.658, Royal Minstrel (£16,17-1) and Mr. .Tinks (£15,450) being the principal contributor* to the total. Another young sire \rell up on the winning sires' list in Blunaiord (by Swynford— Athaai), whose two eons, Trigo and Athford, have .'son over £25.000. NIGHT It AID, THE PRIZE. In « reference to the stallion Night Raid, who in now owned in New Zealand, the Sydney Referee remarks: —" When raced here by Mr. A P. Wade, imported Night Raid wss a comparative failure, and that owner passed him out when Top Gallant commenced his stud career. Night Raid was secured by a New Zetilander at a ccmpnrafively cheat) fig-tire, but it is safe to Bay that Mr. Wade and many otiur prominent Australian breeders would like to have hun quartered on their properties now. Sires of stayers showing the promise of Night march and I'har Lap are not altogether plentiful. and, Considering the limited opportunities available in New Zealand. Night Raid hns certainly proved himself a valuable stud proposition."

MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. Merit, dura of the Avondale Stakee winner Lineage, is an English-bred mare by Diadttmenos (son of Orby) front Lady Hurra, a daughter of Sir Archibald (son of Desmond). The dual success of Prince Val at Avondale would be veTy pleasing to his breeder, Mr. Gordon Carolan, of Waharoa, who has a three-year-old gelding by Lucullus and a two-yiar-old filly by Lapidnry from Sports Queen. Uranium gave the turf several notable performers, and her daughter, Sports Queen, bids fair to follow in her footsteps. Mr, Curolan also owns Lady March, a fullsister to Queen March, who is due to foal shortly to Lapidary.
