PIAKO RIVER WHARVES.
OFFER TO COUNTY COUNCIL.
A CONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE. '[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN* CORRESPONDENT. 1 NGATEA, Friday. Tho Hauraki Plains County Council held a special meeting yesterday to review negotiations with the Lands Department for the sale of 19 wharves on tho hunks of the Pinko River. The wharves were built- by tho department. Threo years ago the wharves were offered to the! council for tho nominal sum of one shilling. The "conditions of sale," howover, were not acceptable to tho council.
At yesterday's meeting tho engineer to tho council, Mr. R Basham, said that in April, 1925, an inspection of all tho wharves had been mado and it had been estimated that the cost of repairs would run into hundreds of pounds. Sinco then tho Kerepeehi whal'f had been inaiutainod by tho dopartment, but tho Kaihore Wharf now needed renewing almost entirely. Tho Pipiroa Wharf would cost a great deal to repair. Tho Puhanga, Kopnarahi, Rawerawe and Hopai wharves could bo maintained by the council, while Johnstono's, Paul's, Shelly Beach and some otiiors should bo abandoned.. It was decided to accept the offer of the wharves for a provided tho dopartment repaired the Kaihere Wharf and removed Johnstono's Wharf.
