MOTOR-LORRY CAPSIZES.
PEDESTRIAN'S ESCAPE.
DESPERATE LEAP TO SAFETY.
A light motor-lorry developed a defect in its steering gear jn Mount Eden Road yesterday morning, and a pedestrian experienced a few moments of excitement in dodging the vehicle before it capsized against a pole at the kerbside. In falling the lorry grazed the fleeing pedestrian and he escaped crushing by inches, his hat being swept from his head r.nd pinned to the ground. The lorry, which is owned by Winstone and Company, Limited, was driven by Mr. F. Ryan. Near the corner of St. Leonard's Road the steering-gear failed •to answer. Although the speed was quite moderate the vehicle was making its own path and the driver had no time to jump cloar or apply tho brakes. He shouted to warn a pedestrian, Mr. H. Glover, who turned to find the lorry bearing down upon him. Mr. Glover dashed for the footpath and the lorry struck tho kerb and turned over alongside the pole just as the fugitive gained tho footpath. Tho driver was imprisoned between the polo and the canopy, but he sustained only a slight cut on (he face. The damaged vehicle had to be dragged back before Mr. Ryan was released, and it was fortunate that no fire occurred, as petrol flowed freely among tho debris.
"It was tho closest shave I have ever had," said Mr. Glover, exhibiting his retrieved hat and reflectively regarding a gash in tho brim. "I heard the driver call 'look out!' and if the lorry had been travelling fast it would have beaten mo to tho footpath."
