AVONDALE TRAINING NOTES.

FEW GALLOPS YESTERDAY.

BY ARCHER,

It was an oil morning on the tracks yesterday and there was scarcely any work of interest.. The outaido of tho course proper, trestles being out about 75ft., was available at Avondalo and several gallops woro recoided there. Details of the work were aB follows:

Archeen was one of the first to work end he went a mile in 1.53.

False Sicnt and Star Stranger were separately .indulged in strong pace work and hit out freely. They look improved alter recent racing and should strip well here. White Fang and Tahoma were associated in a nice gallop over five furlongs. They ran the first two in 27 2-5s and the full distance in 1.7. White Fang held a slight advantage and was going the stronger at the finish, although hia companion alno moved veil.

Watch Officer waa better than Gay Idea (by Kilbroney-—Dancing Doll) over four furlongs in 51 3-ss. Watch Officer seems to have benefited .by his run in tho Debutante Stakes and may make a better showing in the Avondale Stakes.

Several rounds of steady pacing on tho plough were allotted to Historic, who will probably gallop this morning. Historic bas had a sound preparation and his conditjwn is very satisfactory. Knightlike arid Cylinder were indulged in useful work and strode along at about three-quarter pace over the last three furlongs. The members of F. Loomb's team, comprising Frodice, Desert Glow, Arikitoa, Air King, Value. Flying Prince, Valmaire. Biddy's Boy and Illuminagh, who arrived early in the morning, wero out working steadily after breakfast. Awarcro, looking well, did steady work on tho plough. It is some timo since tho chestnut was on tho winning list, but bo ran two thirds at his last two storts last season and may bo liable to show a return to form at any time. NOTES FROM THE TRACK. Additional riding engagements announced for Saturday ore:—C. Davis: Tho Lover, Bonnie, Shino On and Te Kawana. E. Mnnson: Maori Boy. Trickle and Mauriaena. R. Mackie: Benzora, Mountain Guide. Tukunoa, Lady'i Boy, Indolent and Royal Ruler. K. Gill: Bello Star. Lucky Alice, William of Orange. Thtirsby. Flying Juliet and Lady Court. J. Day: Aw&rcre. K. Voitre: Piuthair and Knightlike.

Tho pleasing manner in which Whito Fang reeled off his gallop over five furlongs yesterday indicated that ho will soon be ready to reproduce the form which characterised his efforts toward the end of lust-season, when he notched five successive minor placings. Racing over middle distances might possibly have dulled his early brilliance slightly, but he is looking so bright and well that it would not be altogether surprising if he wcro to make a decent showing among the sprinters in the Flying Stakes Handicap,

So far the three-year-old Tahoma has nothing more than one win in novice company to his credit, and he will be tackling better company here than he has encountered. There has been nothing special about his work since his arrival, but he looks a likely customer and shaped nicely when galloped fivo furlongs with White Fang yesterday. By Hunting Song from Kowerewere, Tahoma is a half-brother to two smart gallopers in Eieits and Koesian, and it may not be long before ho reveals belter form than ho has yet shown.

The hunter Karnngawai, who is engaged in tho Hunters' Steeplechase at tho Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting, reached Ellerslie from New Plymouth yesterday.

Yalkon did not accompany E. George's other horses, Lady Quex and Oration, cn tho trip to Auckland and it is stated Shut he will rot be here to keep his engagements at the Avondale meeting. For some time past Ynlkon has been difficult to 'rain and it would appear as if his trainer is having an unenviable time in attempting to tune him up for racing.

As a two-year-old last season Crimestor was not indulged in a great deal of racing, but "he displayed some promise when he ran second to Te Taone over five furlongs in his fifth and last start. In the meantime he has trained on satisfactorily and he galloped well enough the other morning to indicate that he may be an early winner in novice company. Crimestor is in tho second division of the Maiden Stakes cn Saturday and is likely to be one of tho favourites.

It is the intention of J. H. Jefferd to Rive R. S. Bagby the mount on Cylhidor in the Avondale Slakes. This will mean that the colt will have to carry about slb. overweight. Cylinder is a particularly wellbred youngster r.nd everything points to his proving a good one. On the tracks he is an attractive mover and tho result of hin first public appearance will bo awaited with interest.

S. Reid's two-year-olds, Lineage and Appeal, were on tho track trotting and cantering yesterday and appear to have taken no harm from the race they had last week. The youngsters failed to begin smartly when they raced in the Debutante Stakes and were never prominent. Possibly they will do better in the Avondale Stakes, for they may have benefited by having had a little experience in public.

Although he failed to win last Bcason, Gay Duke displayed some promise in running third in two juvenile handicaps, and for that reason he seems a likely one to have prospects in minor company at the spring meetings. Gay Duke is among » hose engaged in the first division of the Maiden Stakes on Saturday and if he is forward enough to run out seven furlonss he may be in the firing line at the finish.

It is stated that A. E. Ellis will r'de Prodico, Desert Glow and Flying Princo at Avondalo oil Saturday.

The Waikato trainer M. J. Carroll, who has been in Sydney with Paganelli and Ts.»!y, returned home by the Ulimaroa, v/bic'n reached Wellington on Tuesday. Tasty and Paganolli are booked to leavo Sydney for Auckland to-morrow.

The two-yenr-old gelding by Dincqucmd from Mazabuka that in engaged in tho Avondalo Stakes has been named Jlard Words.

LATEST ARRIVALS.

More visiting trainers with horses for the Avondnlo Spring' Meeting arrived yesterday, when those to reach headquarters included: —l'". Loomb: Proilice, Desert Glow, l''lying Prince. Value, Air King. Arikitoa, Biddy's Boy, Valmaire and Bhtininagh. E. George: Oration and Lady Qnes. J. Brown: Silvermine and Chief Link. It. E. Hatch: Pitithair. C. Jackson: Benzora. A. Paul: Awarero. D. ASHBURTON RACES.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—-OWN COniIEPPONDENT. ]

CUKISTCIIUnCH. Wednesday.

Night Lad. who did well as a two-year-old is duo to raco at Ashburton on Saturday. Ho has been accepted for in two races, but is likely to contest tho Farewell Handicap.

Tho handicappcr did not treat tho good horses very leniently In the Farewell Handicap at Ashburton, and in consequence Silver Paper, Rapier, Black Duko and Great Star are missing from tho acceptances. Another, Aspiring, was also withdraw* for the same reason, as aha was weighted at 8.1*3 on » 7.7 minimum, and had won only ono race, the McLean Stakes, to date.
