BETTER TIMES BAZAAR.

HELP FOR CITY MISSION.

A SUCCESSFUL OPENING

A "Better Times Bazaar," in aid of funds for tho Auckland City Mission, was opened before a largo gathering in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon by tho deputy-mayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican. The city missioner, the Rov. Jasper Calder, paid a tribute to Mr. Entrican's interest in the mission and asked him to convoy to the City Council tho mission's appreciation of its assistance.

Mr. Entrican apologised for tbo absence of Mr. E. J. l'helan, a member of the council, who was to have opened; tho bazaar. In spite of the large amount of unemployment there were unmistakable signs of. "better times" ahead. On behalf not only of tho City Council but also of the citizens of Auckland ho had much pleasure in declaring the bazaar opened. A feature of tho bazaar was a largo wooden ship modelled on tho lines of a modern steamer. Tho vessel, which is 70ft. long, with a width of 18ft., comprised two funnels, masts, cabins and lifeboats. Tho structure, which was painted white with red funnels, was artistically decorated with streamers and balloons Tho ship was illuminated in tho evening and mado a picturesque spec taclo. A realistic noto was lent by the blowing of the vessel's siren after the opening ceremony. Constructed by the men's guild of the mission tho ship, which boro on her bow tho namo "Slipusaquid," was an object of considerable attention. Hej merchan diso comprised a variety of utility articles and eatables, each cargo hold and cabin being a separate stall. In addition to the ship there were a number of produce, cakes, confcctionorv and novelty stalls arranged, round the sides of the hall. Many of tho courts were organised by suburban and country Anglican parishes. Owing to its extensive activities tho mission is evor in need of funds, and tho bazaar has been organised on a largo scale to that end. The fair will bo continued to-day and to-morrow, and the liberal response from tho public which was evidenced yesterday should bo main tained. <•
