PIAKO COUNTY NOTES.

ROAD AND BRIDGE NEEDS. TAHUNA-OHINEWAI HIGHWAY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE AROHA, Monday. The Piako County Council met to-day, Mr. W. R. Lowry presiding. A letter was read from the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce suggesting that the presence of three running boards on county bridges adjacent to Morrinsville was a source of danger to motorists. It was considered that if such boards were still required they should be extended to either side of all bridges.

The chairman said he considered the letter was out of order. Chambers of commerce were not authorities on bridges. He said the complaint arose from "every Tom, Dick and Harry motoring over the bridges at 40 or 50 miles an hoar." Mr. Kennedy": Tell them the matter is receiving attention. That is all we want I will move in that direction. This was seconded and carried. It was later decided to receive the letier.

The Public Works Department requested that attention bo paid to the TahunaOhinewai main highway, on which a bridge was in a very decayed condition. ''Considerable settlement has taken place in this area," stated the letter, "and it would appear that remedial measures are very necessary, even to the replacement of the bridge." The matter was referred to the riding member and engineer. Mr. J. J. Patterson offered to metal No. 9 Road for 90 chains in length, if the council would remit his rates for two years. It was decided to inform him that his application was out of order and could not bo entertained, There was a lively discussion' on proposals submitted by the engineer, Mr. B. H. Horner, to declare certain roads county roads, on a basis satisfactory to all the ridings. The bono of contention was provided in the belief of some members that their ridings were being- made to pay for favoured treatment to other ridings. The matter was ultimately deferred for a month.
