FAMOUS ARTISTS.

PICTURES AT WANGANUI.

A number of pictures attributed to famous artists have been acquired in, recent months by tlie Sarjcanfc Art Gallery, Wanganui, cither as gifts or on loan. The names include Van Dyck, Philip Wouvermans, John Wycko of Harlem, Nicholas Colombel and Claude Lor raino (17th Century), John Opie and Richard Wilson (18th Century), and J. F. Millet. The Dutch school is particularly well represented. Information lias been received that a largo water-colour by Frank Brangwyn, R.A., has been purchased in London for tho, gallery, and that possibly one by W. Russell Flint will also bo bought. Tho annual report of tho New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, issued recently, gives a list of 17 pictures acquired for the Wellington gallery in the course of tho year. These aro principally by Now Zealand artists, and includo ono landscape by tho late John Gully.
