AUSTRALIAN TREATY.
CANADIAN OPINION DIVIDED.
BREACH AMONG CONSERVATIVES. Australian and N.Z, Press Association. VANCOUVER, Aug. 1. Tho speeches of Mr. R. B. Bennett, Leader of the Opposition, on the Australian trade treaty are arousing so much opposition as to amount to a complete cleavage between the Federal and provincial Conservatives. For years Mr. Bennett has protested against tho treaty and is now renewing his opposition to it in various parts of British Columbia. Ho has made no attack so far on tho coast, where tho great paper and salmon industries benefit enormously from the Australian markets.
The Provincial Government has openly desired an extension of the treaty to cover timber, and would bitterly oppose an effort to reduce the present advantages of tho agreement.
Mr. Bennett's journalistic friends on the coast also support tho treaty. Tho Vancouver Daily Provinco, a Conservative organ, has warned the Conservative Party not to meddle with the pact.
