COUNCILLOR RESIGNS.
TAKAPUNA BOROUGH MEMBER
DISAGREEMENT OVER FINANCE.
As a result of the Takapuna Borough Council's decision to advance £2OOO from nest year's allocations for the completion of its programme of unemployed relief work, a member of the council, Sir. A. M. Seaman, resigned his seat yesterday.
It was Mr. Seaman's contention that the proposal was financially unsound and was illegal. He said if the allocation was made, at the end of the year the council would certainly be faced with an overdraft that could not be covered by debts to the council. The present rate was too high for some of the ratepayers, but he feared that a substantial increase would have to bo made next year, perhaps even without the allocation.
Nominations for the vacancy wj|l close on August 16, and a by-election will be held on August 28.
