STUD NOTES. CARBINE—ST. SIMON STRAIN. BY PHAETON. There i 3 a descendant of Carbino racing in the United States and on. important win was recently associated with his name. This is Light Carbine, who led tho field homo in the Brooklyn Handicap at Aqueduct. Now York, on June 16. The race in question was worth £2BGO. The Carbine strain comes to Light Carbine through is dam. Queen Carbine, who is by Carbine. Light Carbine was foaled in America, but. he is an English-bred horse. At tho bulc of the late Lord Manton's stud in 1022 Oueen Carbine, with a filly fool at foot bj Sunstar and in foal to Galloper Light, figured in the catalogue and she was bought by Mr. A. K. Macomber for olOOgns. Queen Carbine produced a colt to Galloper Light in 1923 and the horso racing as Light Carbine was the result. Queen Carbino is out of tho celebrated Persimmon mare Sceptre, and as Light Carbino is a stallion lie can be regarded as a horso likely to bo given an opportunity to earn fame as a sire when bis racing days are over.
THE GREY SHADE. Grey horses have been to the fore in ninny of the bits races iu England this Reason, and in one week three of them—Mr. Jinks, Taj Mali and Royal Minstrel—were first past the post in the 'J.wo Thousand Guineas and One Thousand Guineas at Newmarket and the Victoria C'up at Hurst Park respectively. Royal Minstrel has since won the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park. These successes have led a leading veterinary surgeon to declare that there is not a sin vie grey thoroughbred ill the Stud Rook whose ancestry cannot be traced hack to two Ai'ab stallions—Alcock's Arabian and the Brown low Turk—both of which were to Eue'aud in 17!) I. They were Barbs: that is. Aral) horses of the North African strain. Many oi their progeny were bay or brown, but the grey throw-back always cropped up. There was a. grey mare—Gem ot' Gems—that was tho ancestor of such fnmoua grey winners ns The Tetrarch, Tetrntema. Roi Herodfi and Lo Samaritain. Tho curious point about greys, ho added, is that they ate often not grey to stint with and often not winners to start with. They achieve success when they Ret their grey hairs.
si is ks or Tin-: ska, son. The English-bred sire Whirlwind will again .thin season bo at tho service of breeders at the Dilworth Model Stud Farm, Mangere A perusal of tho pedigree of Whirlwind shows him to be one of the bestbred horses that have been imported to the Dominion. (lot by Galloper J,ight (a sou of Sunstnr and grandson of Sundridge), the stout strain is immediately found in Whirlwind's pedigree, and his dam, Double Back, being b.v Bachelor's jJottble (a son of Tredennis and grandson of Kendal), the famous Bend Or line has come into the pedigree. A Ft rain of the celebrated St. Simon on each side can be regarded us an attractive setting of a high-class pedigree. Whirlwind is a hor.=o of true masculine physique, and. as ho is now only ill his fifth year, his future as a site can be viewed as brimful of promise.
