LANDS OFFICER'S FRAUD.
£414 NOT ACCOUNTED FOR. ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY. [ 11Y TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A pica of guilty was made by Thomas George Gillespie, aged 49, a clerk, to tho charge that, between July, 1923, and May, 1927, he fraudulently failed to account for sums totalling £414 to the Lands Department. An inspector of the Audit Department gave evidence of discovering irregularities and said it was by reason of accused's forgeries that they wcio not discovered earlier. To counsel witness said there had been no audit of these particular books for four years until 1928. There were now some changes in the system of booking being mafic. Tho changes, however, were being made prior to the discovery. The alterations to tho receipts wero very clumsily dorio and would bo evident to very casual inspection* Gillespie was committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence.
