STOWAWAY IN COURT.
ARRIVAL FROM AUSTRALIA. ORDERED TO PAY FARE. [nY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] DUNE DIN, Wednesday. A stowaway arrived at J'ort Chalmers this morning from Port Kembla on the steamer Kaiwarra. When brought before Mr. A. Cable, J.P., at the Police Court lie said that his name was William Phillips and that he belonged to Dunedin, where lie had worked before going to Australia.
Having been out of work for some time he thought ho would have a better chance of obtaining employment if he returned to his own country. He had offered to work on the ship, but the captain would not permit it. Nevertheless, he had done a little to help the ship's " Peggy." He pleaded guilty to the chargo of travelling on the steamer without .obtaining permission to do so. anil to a further chargo of iff)l paying his fare, which was £6 10s second-class.
Captain Stewart, master of the Kaiwarra., said tho ship sailed from Port Kembla at 10 p.m. on .July 4, and the following morning when she was 100 miles from land the accused came out of the bunkers. Ho offered to work, but that was not permitted, for if stowaways were allowed to work their passage the ship would be full of them every trip, and they would hecomo a nuisanco. The Bench decided that on the first charge tho accused should be convicted and discharged. On the second charge he was convicted and fined the amount of Hie fare! in default one week's imprisonment. As the accused had impressed the justice as a likely man to obtain work he was allowed 24 hours in which to pay the fine.
