PAIR OF SHOES STOLEN. THIEF TRACED BY OWNER. "This is an ordinary contemptiblo theft," said Sub-Inspector McCarthy when Ernest Walton, aged 36, a fireman, was charged in the Police Court yesterday with the theft of a pair of shoes, valued at 30s the property of Albert Charles Simpson. Accused denied : tho offence. The owner of tho shoes, Simpson, sain lie was employed as a hotel barman in Newmarket, and left his shoes in the changing room on going on duty. Missing them on his return he reported the theft to the police, and when ho finished work he went to second-hand shops, and later to another hotel in Newmarket, to seo if anyone had attempted to sell tho shoes. He saw accused in the other hotel with tho shoes. After the barman in the other hotel had given evidence that accused had attempted to sell the shoes both to him and to a stranger, accused stated he had obtained the shoes from the Heturned Soldiers' Association. Ho could prove where he got them. Tho Magistrate, Mr. I''. K. Hunt: Prove it then. Walton then said he had bought tliern in a shop at Wanganui. Ho had noth ing more to say. Sentence of t'me month's imprisonment was passed by the magistrate, who said Iks con If I not believe accused's story. A charge of obtaining with intent to rlc-Fraud the sum of £ls by means of a valueless cheque at YVhangaroi, on June 24, was preferred against Frederick Alexander Brydon, aged 39, a farm hand, of Maungutapere. On the application of Chief Detective Hammond accused was remanded to appear on Monday. A remand until to-morrow was granted in tho case of Eva Ling, aged 33, who was charged with being idle and dis orderly in that sho consorted with undesirables. It was stated by tho police that drink was responsible for hor appearance, whilo Mr. Smyth, who appoared for her, stated she had been working well recently. Tho case was adjourned to obtain a report from tho probation officer.
