RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS.

GERMANS NOW ELIGIBLE.

GESTURE OF FRIENDLINESS.

PRINCE OF WALES APPROVES. Australian and N.Z. Preen Association. (Received July 8. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, J illy 7. More than 400 former Rhodes scholars assembled in the banqueting hall at Rhodes House, Oxford, to celebrate the 25th annnivcrsary of tlio establishment of the Rhodes Trust. The ex-Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, presided. Tho Prince of Wales was tho chief guest. Nineteen Australians and five New Zealanders, headed by K. frisam, were present. For tho first time sinco the war with Germany tho toast list included the three toasts: Tho King, the President of tho United States, rind tho President of tho German Republic. » The chairman in proposing a toast in memory of the founder of the scholarships said he had received cablegrams from Australia and New Zealand, also from other parts of the world where Rhodes scholars were celebrating tho anniversary in a similar manner.

Mr. Baldwin announced on behalf of the trustees that it had been decided that tho scholarships should again be available to German students. He explained that the five scholarships taken from Germany in 1916 would remain with tho Dominions, but thoso now given would be extra. They would enable four German Rhodes Scholars to go to Oxford. A British official wireless message says tho Prince of Wales welcomed Mr. Baldwin's announcement that tho trustees had decided to renew the scholarships to Germans.

" Wg have with us this evening some old German Rhodes scholars," said the Trince. "Wo welcome them back to Oxford most heartily. I have had the pleasure this evening of shaking hands with an old Magdalen man who was a German Rhodes scholar, whom I ha'd not seen since 1914. .

' In this building and in the colleges will be found on the rolls of honour the names of Gorman Rhodes scholars who fell

in the war. That shows that this foundation is not based on any narrow racial feeling and that its ideals are those which all may follow, forgetful of past enmities, and reviving old friendships."
