TWO NEW APPOINTMENTS.
OVERSEAS TRADE SECRETARY. Australian Press Association—United Service (Received July 8, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 7. Mr. George M. Cillett, Labour M.P. for Finsbury has been appointed Secretary of the Overseas Trade Department. Mr. Samuel P. Viant, Labour M.P. for Willesden West, has been appointed Assistant-Postmaster-General. Mr. George Masterman Gillett, the new Secretary of the Overseas Trade Department, is the son of a banker. He was born in London in 1870, and educated at tho Society of Friends Boarding School, Scarborough, and in Paris. He became a discount-banker in 1894 (Gillett Brothers, Lombard Street). He was a member of tho Finsbury Borough Council, 1900-6; London County Council, 1910-22; alderman, 1922; member of the House of Commons appeal tribunal under the Military Service Act, 1916-18; and was first elected to Parliament for Finsbury in 1923. Mr. Samuel Philip Viant, tho new Assistant-Post •waster-General, was born at Plymouth and educated at Devonport Higher Grade School. ITo is a foreman carpenter. From 1915-18 be was a member of the executive of the London Labour Party. He was formerly vice-chairman of the National Conciliation Board for the building industry, a member of the Willesden District Council and Education Conimitteo, and of the West London Co-opera-tive Society's education committee. He has represented Willesden West in the House of Commons since 1923,
